Hampden Estate "Great House - Distillery Edition 2020" Old Pure Single Jamaican Rum (750ml)

SKU #1520384

The Hampden Estate is quickly becoming acknowledged by spirits experts as one of the most important producers of any kind anywhere in the world. What was once relegated to the blender's warehouse has now been established as one of the finest spirits producers in the world. The brand's identity is intertwined with the famous Italian importer, Luca Gargano, who revived its image and helped blend and market the first tropically aged, distillery-bottled versions of this special product. Now the distillery is releasing its Distillery Only blend to the world. This one was blended by Hampden's Master Distiller Vivian Wisdom and consists of two of the many Hampden marks, OWH and <>H. The OWH or Outram W Hussey component (40-80 gr/hL esters) is the lowest ester rum made at Hampden and was distilled in 2013. The <>H component (900-1000 gr/hL) is one of the higher ester rum and was distilled entirely in 2017. Blended 80/20, the resulting rum is modelled to the preferences of the distillery workers themselves and is absolutely delicious. The Hampden Estate is named as a tribute to the astonishingly old mansion at the distillery built in 1779 by the estate's original owners, the Stirling family. Its first floor was used for rum storage barrels waiting to be transferred. Now it serves as a symbol for the incredible tradition that's been built there over the centuries. Only 3,000 bottles of this special rum were produced worldwide.

The exemplary Hampden Estate is easily the world's most exciting rum right now. After literally centuries playing second fiddle to the big blenders in Europe, the distillery has reclaimed it's importance and it's name to the delight of rum fans across the globe. This exceptional bottling, designed exclusively for the distillery gift shop, and available only in a few selected markets across the globe represents the style of rum the distillery workers themselves drink. A blend of low and high ester rums distilled and aged completely at the special distillery in Trelawny, there should be a spirits lover on earth who isn't clamoring to taste a bottle of this. Let's see what we can expect. The color is deep copper. The nose explodes from the glass offering flavors that can only be captured by the special rums of Jamaica. If one were forced to make a comparison, you might have to say it's somewhere between the best bourbon and the finest old Islay. The nose exhibits an unending basket of ripe tropical fruits and exotic spice pointed by complex savory notes - clean ashy smoke, fresh rubber, black olive, lacquer box, salted fish, tobacco leaf, citrus oils and Tahitian vanilla. While it's impossible not to appreciate the intensity of the funk, there's something extremely approachable. It is very hot and spice neat and some might benefit from the addition of the tiniest ice cube, but depth of flavor is impressive and unending. The simple truth is this is a world class spirit. This bottling that should be considered by all to be a benchmark in the category and one of the most exciting products of any sort over the last year. If you're ever going to jump on the funky rum train, this is your chance to do it in style.

Very cool. This new Estate bottling from Hampden is kind of funky, but not as far afield as some Jamaican rums can get. Scents of dark honey, molasses, permanent marker (in a good way!), with big spice and pineapple. The palate begins with the sweet notes, but throughout the sipping experience it shifts toward the more savory elements. Sugary brown butter becomes citrus transitioning to wood then savory spices like turmeric and mustard powder by the finish.

An interesting and delicious Jamaican Rum. The nose in inviting, with fruity and sweet aromas and and undertones of earthy funk common in rums from Jamaica. In the mouth there are soft and round flavors that have a subtle earthy finish. While enjoyable out of the bottle, it opens up with a splash of water and becomes a little softer.
