2019 Arnot-Roberts "Trout Gulch Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

SKU #1520371 96 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2019 Chardonnay Trout Gulch is fabulous. Palpable energy and tension drive a core of crushed rocks, lemon confit, mint and white flowers. Intensely saline, tense notes really bristle in this magnificent Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay. The 2019 is naturally very young, but it is stellar. Dried flowers, sage, mint and dried herbs linger. (AG) Inner quote mark (1/2021)

94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Lovely, warm citrus and white-peach aromas with dried herbs as well. Medium-bodied with well-structured acidity that steadily builds flavor on the palate to a floral and mineral crescendo. Layered, mouthwatering and charming. Drink or hold. Inner quote mark (11/2021)

It has been known for millennia that the grape vine thrives at the margins of possibility. When forced to toil and struggle by climate or soil, the resulting fruit is often the most concentrated, complex and expressive of place. These age-old wisdoms bear true with the revered fruit of Trout Gulch Vineyard in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. A small vineyard, nestled in the coastal redwoods, just three miles from the frigid Pacific Ocean. Often cloaked in fog, these 40 year old vines issue forth some of the most highly sought after Chardonnay in all of California. The vineyard's saving grace, after cold, foggy summers, are the all-but-guaranteed clear skies of fall and long hangtime extending into October. Arnot-Roberts takes a parcel of the Old Wente Clone Chardonnay planted here in 1980. This clone with its uneven "hens and chicks" berries, high skin to juice ratio, and naturally high acidity, produces exceptionally flavorful wine. From a great vineyard such as this, organically and meticulously farmed, all the winemaker really needs to do is carefully and a gently usher it into bottle. In 2019 Arnot-Roberts sealed this place into a bottle with remarkable clarity. The wine is a tack sharp capture of this terroir. Floral tones of a mountain meadow, orchard blossom, sea spray, crushed quince, and slivered almonds. Wonderful weight and texture on the palate combine with a brisk acid line giving tension and precision to the mineral streaked finish. Tightly wound right now but already showing its class and pedigree. A bottle of Chardonnay that can be enjoyed anytime over the next 10-15 years, and will hold its own with the finest examples of this varietal wine from anywhere on the planet.
