2018 Domaine Marc Colin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Caillerets"

SKU #1519143 93-95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru comes from vines around 50 years of age. It boasts a stunning bouquet, the crushed wet limestone, subtle citrus peel and light smoky notes emerging from the glass with exceptional delineation. The palate is supremely well balanced, with beautifully integrated oak, hints of vanilla pod and almond flakes that complement the steeliness and focus on the finish. Just a brilliant wine. Outer quote mark One of the highlights of the portfolio is the 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets, a lovely wine that wafts from the glass with scents of citrus oil, oatmeal, crushed stones, green pear and a light touch of reduction. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and precise, with good depth at the core, lively acids and chalky structure. Damien Colin continues his progression towards longer élevage in larger vessels: In 2017, he purchased more 300- and 350-liter barrels, a trend that continued in 2018, and after a year in wood, his wines now see a protracted sojourn in tank on the lees. He's adding less sulfur dioxide at harvest, finding that fermentations last longer. And longer élevage with attendant natural clarification meant that he was able to bottle his 2017s entirely without fining or filtration. Those 2017s, revisited from bottle, confirmed their fine showing last year; and 2018, rounder and more immediate in style, looks to be another success for Domaine Marc Colin, as my notes testify. Outer quote mark Strong sulfur flattens the fruit at present though there is no particular reason that it shouldn't clean up before bottling. Otherwise there is excellent cut and tension to the mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that also possess fine mid-palate density before culminating in a powerful, serious and impressively persistent finish. This is an imposingly scaled wine by the typical standards of Caillerets, yet the balance is impeccable. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding* Inner quote mark (6/2020)

K&L Notes

95-97 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Pale lemon colour with a racy stony nose. Just the faintest funflint reduction. This is perfectly poised and gets my vote this year. Fruit acidity and the mildest wood tannins meet at the finish, with superb persistence. Really perfect!"
