2018 Liminal "WeatherEye Vineyard" Columbia Valley Rhône Blend (Previously $60)

SKU #1518833 96 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Fruit for this inaugural wine comes from a new site up and over the top of Red Mountain and down onto the north side. Grenache makes up 42%, followed by Mourvèdre (38%) and Syrah. The aromas bring notes of pomegranate, mulberry, crushed rock, savory herb and black pepper. It's a big mouthful of a wine, rich, layered and intense, with earthshaking intensity and plenty of tension. There's impressive tannin and an abundance of acidity to enliven it all. The fruit-filled finish seems near endless. It's a new benchmark for Rhône-style blends in Washington. *Cellar Selection* (SS) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

Outer quote mark The 2018 GSM WeatherEye Vineyard offers up an incredibly complex nose that includes lots of red and blue fruits, white pepper, and sandalwood as well as a medium to full-bodied, supple, seamless style on the palate. A blend of 42% Grenache, 38% Syrah, and 20% Mourvèdre, brought up in neutral oak, it would stand up to any top Châteauneuf du Pape out there. Inner quote mark (5/2021)

Outer quote mark Bright red-ruby. Slightly inky, medicinal scents of dark berries, licorice pastille and black pepper, with a hint of blueberry pie. Concentrated, pure flavors of crushed blueberry and blackberry convey lovely subtle spicy sweetness and a strong impression of energy. Still a bit inky and youthful but already intense, juicy and complex. Finishes suavely tannic and long. An excellent GSM bottling with real energy and spine, this is a bit less sweet and perfumed today than the varietal Grenache and needs time to unwind. The Mourvèdre component makes an important contribution to the blend's structure. (ST) 93+ Inner quote mark (12/2020)

K&L Notes

Liminal is one of the most exciting new projects in Washington. Though the designation shows Columbia Valley, the WeatherEye vineyard is actually planted right along the ridgeline of Red Mountain at 1200 feet in elevation. The vineyard, planted on the opposite aspect of the Red Mountain AVA demarcation, is a radical site with very thin soils over fractured volcanic basalt. The winemaker for Liminal is none other than Chris Peterson of Avennia. Chris already has a reputation as one of the best winemakers in the state, and Liminal looks set to build on that status even further. The 2018 Liminal GSM is a blend of 42% Grenache, 38% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah. The wine was aged for 16 months in neutral French oak. (Ryan Woodhouse K&L Domestic Wine Buyer)
