2018 Avennia "Oliane" Yakima Valley Sauvignon Blanc (Previously $20)

SKU #1518827 91-93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Not yet bottled, the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Oliane will certainly be an outstanding wine. It has a racy yet also textured style, with classy lemon, white flowers, apple blossom aromas and flavors. Winemaker Chris Peterson continues to fashion some of the most impressive wines in the State. These are always more classical in style and show plenty of acidity and structure in their youth, yet they blossom with just short term cellaring and are brilliant wines. Inner quote mark (4/2019)

92 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Inviting aromas of ripe stone fruits, fresh pineapple, gooseberry and mirabelle. Tactile and delicious, with its white peach flavor complicated by a hint of tropical fruitiness from the Boushey component. Sound acidity and a note of shiso leaf give the wine lovely inner-mouth lift. I also picked up a savory suggestion of the concrete eggs, which owner/winemaker Chris Peterson says slow down the development of tannins in this wine. This firmly structured Sauvignon Blanc should show more minerality by next spring. (ST) Inner quote mark (12/2019)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Boushey fruit makes up two-thirds of this wine, with the rest from equally esteemed Red Willow Vineyard. Barrel fermented with native yeast, the aromas are brooding, with notes of lemon pith, mineral, graham cracker, pink grapefruit and flower. The palate brings texture, nervy acidity, richness and deftness to the citrus and tropical-fruit flavors. Kiwi notes linger on the finish. It's a unique wine for the state. Best enjoyed with additional time in bottle. (SS) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

K&L Notes

Oliane is Avennia's Bordeaux-style Sauv Blanc. Wild yeast fermentation in oak barrels and concrete eggs plus 7 months ageing on the lees builds texture and complexity like the great dry white wines of Pessac-Léognan. The 2018 Oliane is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Boushey and Red Willow vineyards in Yakima Valley.

One of the finest Domestic Sauvignon Blancs you're likely to come across at any price point. I honestly put this up there with the very best examples from iconic producers like Spottswoode, Eisele, and with another one of my favorite Washington standouts, Delille. Beyond Domestic competition, this could happily mix it up with a lineup of top white Bordeaux from Graves and Pessac-Léognan. The intensity of the varietal character is stunning, bursting with freshly chopped herbs, orchard blossom, jasmine, citrus peel, wet chalk, and lime leaf. The palate is broad and textured but keeps a razor-sharp edge of salivatory acidity and beautiful stony mineral tinges. The oak is very subtle but just gives another facet, along with the concrete egg portion that I always suspect gives a slightly wild complexity. It's a complex wine and one that I could (and probably will) drink time and time again. Our pricing is from a winery-direct deal and makes this one of the must-have values in this category. Try a bottle and then load up quick...or just trust me and grab case—this is a winner.
