2018 Ata Rangi "Crimson" Pinot Noir Martinborough

SKU #1518621 94 points Bob Campbell

Outer quote mark Aromatic pinot noir with an appealing mix of cherry, plum, mint, dried herbs, and spicy and stemmy flavours. A supple, attractive wine that's perhaps not as concentrated as its distinguished stable mate, but represents excellent value at this price. A wine of character and class. Inner quote mark (9/2019)

Outer quote mark It’s beautifully ripe and fragrant on the nose showing sweet cherry, plum, thyme and toasted nut characters, followed by a succulent palate that’s fleshy and beautifully flowing. It’s fabulously polished and harmonious, offering delectable fruit flavours with elegant spicy complexity. Inner quote mark (11/2018)

Outer quote mark There’s so much to this wine. It is a pinot that really speaks of quality tannin, fresh and quite concentrated fruit flavors and a layered, succulent, fleshy and rich, dark-cherry finish. One of the best value wines on the planet, hands down! Drink now. Screw cap. Inner quote mark (8/2019)

Outer quote mark It’s tempting to recommend the superb Ata Rangi Pinot Noir, or the now dormant Craighall Chardonnay (the virused block is being replanted); even the Te Wa Sauvignon Blanc is impressive for the category. But this more affordable Pinot is a real showcase for both this organic winery and Wairarapa as a whole, boasting a glorious aroma of pomegranate and rose, rounded off with lovely cherry fruit on a supple palate. Outer quote mark The 2018 Crimson Pinot Noir is a blend of fruit from vines up to about 20 years of age. Originally, it was a fruit-forward, young-vines cuvée, but this vintage is cut from sturdier cloth, showing some serious tannins on the finish. It's pretty and perfumed up front, with scents of roses and berry tea, adding raspberries and cherries on the medium-bodied, structured palate. Give it another year or two in the cellar, then drink it over the next 7-8 years. (JC) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

Outer quote mark Like the name itself, this wine is vibrant crimson in color. There's a slight reductive funk on the nose, but this blows off quickly in the glass, replaced by bright red fruit, crushed violet, and minerals, all backed by something more savory and stalky, like soy sauce and cinnamon stick. In the mouth it's light and lithe, crunching with fresh fruit and saline notes through to the finish, and wound tightly by powdery tannins. Simultaneously serious yet approachable. Outer quote mark A discreetly floral-suffused nose is also very pretty and features slightly higher-toned aromas of red cherry, raspberry and currant. The very supple and delicious if again not especially concentrated flavors possess a beautiful texture; indeed it is succulent, all wrapped in a slightly firmer, compact and youthfully austere finish that offers a bit better depth and persistence. Inner quote mark (10/2020)

It is hard not to like this wine. I will admit I am a huge fan of New Zealand Pinot Noir, it is the combination of fruit and savory tones. I love how that is expressed in Martinborough. The nose is all red berries and fruit that is dusted with crushed dried herbs. The fruit shines because the subtle savory contrast. It smells so good. The fruit then again shines on the palate, this time it is lifted, and balanced by the tannins and acid. The wine is effortless, the tannins are fine and fully integrated, the acid is fresh but not pointed. The fruit brightens and takes on more depth but it kept in check. What a wine. This is a Pinot for both "old and new world" wine drinkers.

At this point, Ata Rangi should need no introduction. This pioneering Martinborough producer sits at the very top of New Zealand’s best wineries and their flagship Pinot Noir has a global following, a testament to their uncompromising pursuit of the highest quality Pinot Noir. Yet one of the most welcomed surprises from Ata Rangi is their young-vine Pinot Noir, the Crimson. Sourced from vines 10-20 year-old parcels from theirs Lismore, Waiora and Walnut Ridge blocks, this is a stunning Pinot Noir value that drew amazement from some of our most seasoned sales staff. With a beautiful and penetrating aromatic depth, there’s a rich, vine ripened strawberry with black cherry, wild herb and feral savory undertones. The 20% New French Oak takes a backseat while perfectly balanced fruit and acid interplay on the palate. Completely destemmed, the tannins here are gentle and glide through the long finish. Ata rangi actually produces far less Crimson than their flagship Pinot Noir, but we were able to direct-import a small parcel for the US. If you love Pinot Noir, you absolutely have to try this.
