2017 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Noble Riesling Marlborough (375ml)

SKU #1518617 96 points Bob Campbell

Outer quote mark Very sweet, luscious dessert wine with honey, honeycomb, dried apricot, peach, mango and tropical fruit flavours. A delicious wine with enough acidity to avoid being cloying. Very pure botrytis influence. Inner quote mark (1/2019)

Outer quote mark This is outrageously unctuous and delicious; the opulent bouquet shows dried apricot, Manuka honey, lemon curd and orange marmalade characters, followed by a lavishly sweet palate that is mouthfilling and viscous. Undeniably sweet and luxurious, this is superbly structured by bright acidity, finishing impressively long and decadent. At its best: now to 2022. Inner quote mark (12/2018)

Outer quote mark *Five Stars* "Deep, golden-yellow colour with slight orange hues, lighter edged. The nose is softly fresh and densely packed with concentrated and opulent aromas of very ripe tropical and citrus fruits harmoniously entwined with nectar and honey, marmalade, crystallised fruits and some savoury musky botrytis elements. Very sweet to taste and distinctly unctuous with decadent flavours of ripe tropical fruit and citrus fruit, along with honey, nectar, crystallised fruits, figs and caramel, with an underlay of musky botrytis. This exudes opulence, with a rounded, plush mouthfeel on a fine line of underlying acidity. The wine carries smoothly to a long succulent finish of tropical fruits and honey. This is an opulent and decadent Noble Riesling with tropical and citrussy fruit, honey and nectar, marmalade, caramel and musk on an unctuous palate. Match with fruit and baked desserts, crème caramel and blue cheeses over the next 4 years. Botrytised Riesling fruit from the ‘Kilravock’ vineyards, Wratts Road, Rapaura, hand-picked and bunch selected, hand-sorted, WBP and foot-stomped, fermented in stainless-steel to 10.5% alc. and 241 g/L RS. (500 ml) 617 bottles made." (RC) Inner quote mark (12/2018)

This is one of the most unique and delicious dessert wines in the entire store. The story dates back to the 2017 vintage, when Phil Rose from Rose Vineyards in Marlborough discovered one of his Riesling blocks was infected with botrytis--a rarity in Marlborough. At a lost, he called up New Zealand's most well respected Riesling producers, Anna & Jason Flowerday from Te Whare Ra. Anna told me that when they arrived to inspect the block, their jaws dropped to the vineyard floor. They found absolutely uniform, perfect botrytis across the entire block. Needless to say they bought everything on the spot. The result is a Trockenbeerenauslese style that displays the pure essence of botrytis Riesling. Marmalade, honey and mango all abound on a richly textured palate with bright, lazer-focused acidity. Incredibly delicious and a ridiculous value at its price point, this is one of the best desert wines produced from New Zealand ever.
