2018 Leeuwin "Prelude" Chardonnay Margaret River Western Australia

SKU #1517724 96 points James Halliday

Outer quote mark Leeuwin Estate has the game sewn up with this entry-point wine. It's so precise, so balanced, so pure. The distinction between fruit and oak is impossible to gauge, the length magical. Inner quote mark (11/2020)

93 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark There’s a punchy, confident appeal to this Chardonnay, which has a rich peach, lemon-curd and toasted-hazelnut nose with acute freshness and fruit intensity. The palate unfurls plenty of flavorsome, ripe stone-fruit flesh and then zips taut with bracing acidity on the mouthwatering finish. Inner quote mark (4/2020)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Subtle but distinctive notes of honeydew melon, citrus, buttercup and a lick of spicy, toasty oak lead on the nose. A broad and creamy texture shines on the palate where the stone fruit and melon flavors are lifted by vibrant, citrusy acidity and a saline finish. This is a classic example of modern Aussie Chardonnay that is relaxed and approachable. *Editors' Choice* (CP) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2018 Prelude Vineyards Chardonnay is a multi-clonal blend that spent nine months in oak (30% to 40% new). Hints of caramel accent pineapple and white peach notes in this medium to full-bodied wine, while the plush, ripe, tropical fruit finishes with admirable length. (JC) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

Flavors and aromas of baked apple and crème brulee fill the broad middle of this wine. This is substantial yet remains clean and precise, and interesting notes of mandarin and quince add flavor to the fine finish.

This is not a small wine. Broadly structured, with cream and honey almond notes spread over the fresh nectarine underpinning, the "Prelude" is balanced by a freshness near the finish and nice acidity that evens out its boisterous aspects. The obvious link the the Art Series, this bottles big brother and possibly Australia's greatest wine, is the fine oak influence illustrating an patent winemaking ability.

This may have some California wine maker quaking in their boots because if you like Oakey chardonnay this may be your new go to. With a brighter all around nature this is a lovely little bottle may start replacing some more oaked California chardonnays for its food pairing potential. The nose has that oak and apple with a hint of popcorn that draws in so many people. the palate has brighter green apple highlighted by toast, popcorn, and sweet lemon. If you want something to pair for a white fish look no further!

For almost four decades, Leeuwin has had the distinction of crafting Australia’s finest Chardonnay, the Leeuwin Art Series. Drawing comparisons to Batard Montrachet, Leeuwin has continued to defend their position at the top of Australian wine by relentlessly crafting uncompromising wine. In most years, the Leeuwin Prelude Chardonnay tends to be overlooked in the shadow of the Art Series, but every so often an outstanding vintage in Margaret River results in Prelude that is nearly on par with their flagship. The 2018 Leeuwin “Prelude” Chardonnay is one of these wines. Showcasing incredible power and intensity, this displays all the hallmarks of Australia’s greatest white at a fraction of the price. Stone Fruit abounds in the glass with peach blossom and nectarine aromas above a citrus core and flinty minerality. Add to this the seamless execution of French Oak elevage that brings notes of hazelnut and toasted brioche. The balance, complexity, and resonating finish come together in this profound expression of Chardonnay from one of Australia’s finest producers.
