2019 John Duval "Entity" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia

SKU #1517718 94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A rich and powerful wine that is predominantly (89%) sourced from the Barossa Valley and 11% from the Eden Valley to season. Deeply colored, the very fruit-focused nose has ripe blackberries and dark plums with a subtle, cocoa-dust edge. The palate is generously fleshy and satisfying, with rich fruit driving the palate. Blackberry and dark-plum flavors. Inner quote mark (10/2019)

94 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Powerful, vibrant and fragrant, with dried lavender, Earl Grey, dried oregano, five-spice power and dark chocolate aromatics to mingle with the core of velvety smooth plum, black cherry and wild blackberry flavors. The tannins firm up appealingly on the finish, which goes on and on. (MW) Inner quote mark (4/2021)

93 points Bob Campbell

Outer quote mark Very deep, youthful purple-crimson color which stains the glass. There are nutmeg, almond and pepper overtones to the bouquet and the wine is full-bodied and firmly-structured, with lashings of supple, approachable tannins. Stewed blood plums. A blood-and-thunder Shiraz, with plenty of life ahead of it. Inner quote mark (3/2021)

93 points James Halliday

Outer quote mark Classic Duval, stepping beyond the stress of this drought vintage in flattering depth of vibrant purple hue and generous, glossy, polished blackberry and satsuma plum fruit. Calm, supportive French oak leaves the show to classy fruit, backed by firm, fine, drying tannins. (TS) Inner quote mark (6/2021)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Bursting with blueberry and blackberry fruit, Duval's 2019 Entity Shiraz looks to be a winner, cut from the same cloth as the 2018. Vague hints of peppery spice and violet-laced florals add complexity on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is ripe, supple and mouthwatering, with an almost crisp edge to the cocoa-dusted finish. (JC) Inner quote mark (8/2021)

Long-term Penfolds winemaker John Duval is surely an expert at crafting fine wine. With 40 years of experience he knows the vineyards of Barossa like the back of his hand. The wine opens with dark and rich fruit flavors on the nose with no obvious oak. With well balanced sweet fruit and a nice long finish, this wine is all about the harmonious integration of fruit, oak and texture. Quite a steal at $30 that is made by an icon of the Australian wine industry with access to some exceptional fruit sources. This is classic Barossa Shiraz without the weight and oak sweetness that is all too common. A quick decanting is recommended to let the wine fully show what it is all about, or just bury some in your cellar for 5-10 years.

For anyone following Australian wine, John Duval needs no introduction. After spending nearly 30 years crafting Australia’s greatest wine, the Penfolds Grange, John founded his eponymous family label with his son, Tim. As one of the most respected winemakers in Australia, John has access to some of the best vineyards, and his Entity is one of the best-value Shiraz being produced in Barossa today. Brimming with roasted black cherry, red currant, black raspberry, and smoke, this is bone-dry Shiraz. Using only fine grained Oak barrels, there's just a whisper of spice, placing the purity of fruit on full display. Incredibly concentrated with softened, silky tannins that add crunch at the finish. From a drought year with lower yields and higher concentration, this is a stunning Barossa Shiraz that earned its highest score from Wine Spectator in 15 years. A must-have for lovers of power reds, especially the Aussie versions.

Unbelievable wine! John Duval has outdone himself this time! I have been a huge fan of this wine for a few vintages now, but this 2019 is off the charts. Gorgeous mulberries, wild blackberries, and polished, silky tannins. The wine glides absolutely seamlessly across the palate and has long, bright, mouth-watering finish. It's a stunner of a wine.

If you are in the market for a wine to serve at your late summer barbecues do not look any further! This 2019 Shiraz from John Duval is made from old vine, low-yielding vineyards in the Barossa Valley. It's nose is lifted with plenty of dark, bold fruit that carries onto the palate with a touch of earth and spice. Youthful tannins on the finish indicate a long life ahead, so drink now and save some for later down the road.
