2018 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Mosel

SKU #1517041 95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Super fresh, flinty and fine aromas of lemon and grapefruit on offer, as well as wildflowers and stones. The palate has a smoothly resolved texture with supple, lemon and yellow-peach flavors. Long and even-handed finish. Great depth here. Drink or hold. Inner quote mark (9/2019)

95 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark Ernst Loosen bottles this wine from a parcel of vines planted in Wehlener Sonnenuhr’s blue-slate soils some 130 years ago. Spontaneously fermented in large old barrels and left for a year on the lees without any stirring, it’s so concentrated in its succulent fruit that it seems sweet at first go. But it’s not; it’s simply packed, radiating pure, sunny lemon and clementine flavor from a firm mineral core. Delicious now, this should age well for another decade or more. Inner quote mark (2/2021)

Outer quote mark Ernie Loosen’s Wehlener Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs also comes from a parcel of centenarian vines, with this bottling aged for one year in a three thousand liter fuder, after its fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The 2018 Sonnenuhr GG is 12.5 percent alcohol, has 6.9 grams per liter of acidity and 8.3 grams per liter of residual sugar in this vintage. The wine offers up a refined bouquet of pear, apple, vanilla bean, slate, fruit blossoms and a lovely touch of apple pie spice in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very well-balanced, with a fine core of fruit, excellent mineral drive and cut, zesty acids and a long, focused and complex finish. This is excellent, but give it some time in the cellar to really start to unlock and drink with real generosity and breed. (Drink between 2027-2050) Inner quote mark (8/2020)

89-90 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Zesty lemon mingles with vanilla and seed-tinged apple on the nose as well as on the polished, pithily concentrated palate. The finish is subtly but mouthwateringly salt-tinged as well as admirably transparent to wet stone underpinnings. This was due for bottling near the end of 2019 or in early 2020. K&L Notes

91-94pts Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 49 19. The 2018er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), comes from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Gewann Laychen (central part) and Sandpichter (near Zeltingen) sectors, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This cask sample offers an elegant and quite refined nose of tangerine, candied grapefruit, floral elements, apricot blossom, almond cream, and a hint of smoke. A touch of cream and toffee underlines the fruity side of the wine on the palate. In complement, zesty flavors bring some freshness to the superb finish. This dry Riesling has quite some upside, especially if the fresher side takes over at maturity. 2024-2033+."
