Outer quote mark The Dr. Loosen estate has some of its very oldest vines in the Würzgarten vineyard (they are blessed with tons and tons of old vines!), as the parcel used for their GG here are fully one hundred and twenty years of age and planted on their original roots. Like all of the Dr. Loosen Grosses Gewächs bottlings, it is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged on its fine lees for one year in thousand liter fuder. The 2018 Würzgarten GG is twelve percent octane, has 7.2 grams per liter of acidity and 9.2 grams per liter of residual sugar. The nose of the 2018 is beautifully expressive right out of the blocks, jumping from the glass in a beautiful blend of wild strawberries, gooseberry, lime, salty slate minerality, beautiful spice tones and a topnote of iris blossoms. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, focused and minerally in personality, with a lovely core, fine focus and balance, impressive complexity and a long, vibrant and very refined finish. This too will want some time alone in the cellar to really start hitting on all cylinders, but it has a fine, fine future ahead of it. Inner quote mark (8/2020)

Outer quote mark The penetratingly high-toned nose evokes strawberry distillate and lime peel. An invigoratingly tangy impression of seedy fresh strawberry plays against a texturally polished background, augmented by resinous green herbal notes, then segues into a brightly, vibrantly lingering finish underlain by vivid wet stone. There is an overall sense of animation here, along with ample refreshment, neither of which can be taken for granted in vintage 2018, let alone in a Grosses Gewächs. 91-94 points Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 47 19. The 2018er Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), comes from parcels of very old un-grafted vines in the prime Urglück, Maxberg and Layenhaus sectors, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This cask sample proves still quite closed and driven by some almond cream and residual scents from its spontaneous fermentation. It is only after extensive airing that it reveals some elegantly floral scents of tangerine, vineyard peach, and spices. The wine is quite refined and delicate on the overall rather smooth and fruit-driven palate. Flavors of juicy yellow peach convey a not fully dry-tasting feel to the otherwise beautifully complex and lingering finish."

Riesling

- While the rest of the world has often misappropriated the name--Welchriesling, Riesling Italico, Gray Riesling and Emerald Riesling are all names applied to varieties that are NOT Riesling--this exceptional German varietal has managed to maintain its identity. Perhaps its biggest claims to fame are its intoxicating perfume, often described as having honeyed stone fruit, herb, apple and citrus notes, and its incredible longevity - the wines lasting for decades. Aged Rieslings often take on a distinctive and alluring Petrol-like aroma. Within Germany, the grape seems to do best in the warming slate soils of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Other German regions that turn out great Rieslings include Pfalz, Rheingau and Nahe. German Rieslings are made in a range of ripeness levels. The top wines are assigned Prädikat levels to describe their ripeness at harvest. These are: Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese. Riesling has also achieved acclaim in France's Alsace, the only region in that country where the grape is officially permitted. Alsatian Rieslings are typically dry and wonderfully aromatic. Austrian Riesling is also steadily gaining praise and fine Riesling is also produced in Italy's Alto-Adige and Friuli, in Slovenia and much of Central and Eastern Europe. In the New World its stronghold is Australia, where it does best in the Eden and Clare Valleys. It is also planted in smaller amounts in New Zealand. In the US, winemakers are eschewing the syrupy sweet versions of the 1970s and 1980s, instead making elegant and balanced wines in both California and Washington State.

- Thanks to a recent string of excellent vintages and to the reemergence of Germany onto the international wine writing scene, this is a country that's hot, hot, hot! Germany is divided into 13 wine Region and produces a very wide variety of wine styles, from incredibly high-acid, dry wines to some of the sweetest, most unctuous concoctions on the planet and even a few surprisingly hearty reds. Most of the highest-quality wines are grown on steep banks along the rivers in these Region. Small vineyards are still mostly hand tended and picked, due to the difficult nature of mechanization on these slopes. White wine production accounts for nearly 80% of the total with Riesling being the most important varietal, though Muller-Thurgau is still more widely planted.
