The dark garnet-colored 1988 possesses huge, peppery, fruitcake, herbaceous, olive and smoky flavors and aromas. Expansive and nearly sweet on the palate, there is no doubting the extract levels that must have been obtained to hide a wine that has an alcohol level of over 14%. This thrill-a-sip Gigondas should continue to turn heads, raise eyebrows, and horrify puritans. (RP) (12/1996)
Bold, rich and concentrated, jam-packed with currant, black cherry, plum and anise notes that are firm and tightly wound. Hints of black pepper and spicy oak round out the flavors on the aftertaste. (10/1991)
