One of the most preeminent names in German wine post-WWII through the 1970s, the Eltz family owned some of the most famed and prized vineyard sites along the Mosel and Rhein rivers, as well as the famed castles Burg Eltz and Eltzerhof. Along with contemporaries Schloss Johannisberg and Schloss Vollrads, Schloss Eltz was one of the most widely acclaimed producers from Rheingau during this period. The Eltville Sonnenberg site, with its loamy-loess soils and slopes of anywhere from 10-37% grade, is just upriver from the epicenters of the Rheingau - Erbach, Hattenheim and Johannisberg. The Eltz grand estate didn't survive, but the top dessert wines from a vintage like 1976 will live for many more decades.
