94 points Tim Atkins, MW "La Rioja Alta is one of the most traditional wineries in Haro’s Barrio de la Estación, famous for producing wines that are good to drink on release, but also age beautifully in bottle. This new Gran Reserva, made from Tempranillo with 6% Graciano for added backbone, is very much a reflection of the cooler, more “Atlantic” 2014 vintage. La Rioja Alta didn’t make its top two Gran Reservas – 904 and 890 – in 2014, so all of its best grapes were used for Viña Arana. Fine and elegant, with vibrant acidity, notes of coconut and cinnamon from the American oak and a core of savoury, refreshing tobacco leaf and red berry flavours framed by fine, caressing tannins. Old-fashioned Rioja at its glorious best."

Hello! You are wonderful with your lush nose of red fruits, cherry cola, and milk chocolate! On the palate, you're super interesting and delicious, with your notes of cedar and licorice. You're relatively soft, but, still retain your traditional character with dried cranberries, lavender and dusty notes. Do I detect some whipping cream? You even have a lingering finish and are super versatile for so many different foods. Could we ask more of you? No, we could not!

My very first thought in approaching this is "man, this smells like great Rioja, first job done then". There's something visceral about smelling great Rioja. The nose really jumps out with that sweet oak, dusty middle, and damp tea and earthen floor bottom. The fruit is dark with hints of berry compote and dried berries. The palate is beautifully balanced with more strawberry, potpourri, baking spice, and a finish that reminds me of a scone with strawberry compote and clotted cream, that tea really comes in to round out what is an amazing bottle of wine! Rioja continues to produce top tier wine at a fraction of every other major region!

Chocolate, soy sauce, candied coconut, tea leaves, and dried strawberries medley with cafe au lait creaminess and and lifted end note of warm vanilla. Medium bodied, but with a density of flavor that mimics a fuller bodied bottle with frightening ability. Oak all the way home. One of the most interesting bottles in the shop and one well worth it's place on your table, both now and ten years down the road.

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
