Outer quote mark The 2017 Al Passo is a blend of equal parts Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Open-knit and plaint, with soft curves, the 2017 offers tons of immediacy. Cedar, tobacco, dried herbs and macerated cherry all meld together in an inviting, mid-weight Tuscan red to drink over the next decade or so. (AG) Inner quote mark (9/2020)

Outer quote mark The Tolaini 2017 Al Passo is always an ambitious wine that takes the best of the grapes in its blend: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Each give freshness, structure and textural fiber. Al Passo opens to dark berry fruit and plum, with spice, tobacco and tilled earth. This is a well-priced wine that promises lots of pairings, especially out of a Tuscan cookbook. (ML) Inner quote mark (4/2021)

When I first tried the 2016 vintage of this wine, I was really stunned. I had tried past vintages of this wine and was always looking for a little more. I was thinking that the 2016 was perhaps so much better than previous releases because of the great vintage, but I was surprised by how good the 2017 Al Passo was. It has the same complex aromatics and is made from more or less equal parts of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot aged in a mix of 20% new and 80% used French barriques and some larger casks. It was this blend of grapes that really made the difference. The nose of this wine shows a bit of plumy ripeness and the chocolaty overtones that go along with that, but it has not given up its Tuscan soul, showing hints of dried sage and rosemary. On the palate, the wine shows great balance and lift and reveals a savory flavor profile with more umami, yet still shows the plump middle. The finish is bright, lifted, and buoyant, and the flavors linger for seconds, seemingly waiting for a forkful of something to pair with it. If you liked the 2016 Al Passo, you’ll love this wine too!
