K&L Notes

Château Montus is the crown jewel in Alain Brumont's holdings. Purchased in 1980, it was Brumont's ideal property. Steep hillsides plus the gravelly vineyards with yellow and red clay subsoils made for one of the best terroirs in the region. The Montus is a blend of primarily Tannat with some Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes ferment in large wooden vats and the wine ages in a mix of used and about 60-80% new French oak depending on the vintage. The results are a seamless and inviting Madiran that defines the regional style. The perfect wine for the rich sausage and duck dishes famously made in the region.

For many, Madiran remains undiscovered country. It is a wine region famous (almost infamous) for its broad-shouldered and impenetrable reds. That's if you've even heard of it. The main grape is Tannat and it is inky and chewy as a grape, maybe the most of both of those descriptions. But what vigneron and arbiter of all things Tannat, Alain Brumont has done over the years is figure out how to make the suit fit those ever-so-broad-shoulders. In some cases, he blends a bit of Cab Franc and in this case, he blends in a little Cab Sauv. He uses low yields and strict selection to elevate the fruit and aromatic qualities of the grapes. And, he uses micro-oxygenation to round out some of the grippier tannins. And like a tailor he measures the perfect fit. Full-bodied, filled with blackcurrant, tar, violets, bay and mint notes it is complex and long. To use another analogy, it meets somewhere between Bordeaux and Barolo in style. Mouth-filling, savory and memorable. I had this with some stewed beans and sausage. With Brumont as a master tailor, the bespoke suit that is Montus is impressive and built to last.
