2014 Rogstad "Thornton Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

SKU #1513983

Rogstad is among a clutch of small boutique producers in Sonoma who are making the most of sourcing fruit from the many outstanding vineyard sites in the surrounding AVAs. The Thornton vineyard is a high-elevation site just over the crest of the Petaluma Gap from the iconic Gap's Crown vineyard. This east-facing plot of vines sits at 1,800 feet so it draws all the incredible benefits of the Gap into its finished wines. The wine is made from a one-acre block and shows vibrant, racy red fruit and a spicy, lifted finish supported by clean and precise acidity from the site. Anyone on the hunt for the next hidden gem in northern California's Sonoma County should take a close look at Rogstad.

Rogstad has quickly become one of my favorite Pinot Noir producers. Steven Rogstad has been completely off my radar for years, now I'm buying everything I can. I'm absolutely loving his single vineyard Pinot Noirs. Even his El Dorado County Nebbiolo is a dead ringer for Barbaresco! For this bottling he sourced fruit from the Thornton vineyard on the flank of Sonoma Mountain. Steven made a mere 112 cases of this single vineyard, one-acre block, Pinot Noir. The hallmark here is to capture the true elegance and grace of Pinot Noir while retaining all the energy and life that comes from this hallowed grape. The Thornton vineyard bottling is a bit more muscular than the Van der Kamp with a decided mineral note. Black cherry all the way and a finish that mellifluously flows across your palate and lasts for a minute plus. Our offer for the 2015 vintage sold-out over-night. I was beyond delighted to find out we could now buy the 2014 edition. Bravo Steven!
