2017 Bernard Baudry "Les Clos Guillot" Chinon

SKU #1513969 93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark From one of Baudry’s top limestone sites. Aged 12 months in 2- to 5-year-old barrels, then rests for nine months in cement tanks. Still young and rambunctious, very juicy and full of energy, very like Pinot-like. It’s one of the fruitier Baudry expressions, with lots of black and sour cherry, some blackberry and tomato, and light stoniness on the finish. Give this a year or two and it will pay back your patience. (JW) Inner quote mark (7/2020)

K&L Notes

Chinon is among the wonderful but relatively underappreciated wine regions that generate a lot of staff favorites at K&L, and we are privileged to carry the wines of one such favorite, Bernard Baudry. Bernard worked as an advisor to the Tours laboratory and studied in Beaune before returning to the Loire and starting his own project on just two hectares in 1975. Now holding 32 hectares throughout Chinon (about 90% of which are planted with Cabernet Franc, with the rest being Chenin), he produces some truly great wines. 94-96 points from Chris Kissack, Winedoctor.com: "This sample was tasted from cement cuve, the wine resting here after a period in barrel, before bottling. It has seen out a year in barrique, and will pass nine months in cement cuve before bottling. The colour here is nothing less than striking, shimmering yet opaque, and Matthieu and I migrated to the door of the cellar to better appreciate it in the bright Ligérian sunlight. The nose is no less convincing, in fact it is quite beautiful, with crushed black summer fruits, damsons steeped in cassis, with notes of smoke and chalk. The palate feels so supple but also precise, with chalk and limestone substance, underpinned by taut acidity and silky tannins. It has quite lovely grip in the finish. This feels very special, with a little saline-mineral feel threaded through it." (June 2019)

This is grown toward the top of the hill on limestone and clay on a southeast-facing slope. The plot is the youngest of the three wines, having been planted between 1993 and 2000. This is the most delicate of the wines, filled out with strawberry, raspberry, and the violet similar to the other two, plus a bright touch of pepper. The palate is light and silky, with the strawberry and raspberry forming the backbone, but with more minerality. The effect is more akin to potpourri, with the floral components of the previous two paired up with spice and dried strawberry.
