2018 Domaine Saint Préfert Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

SKU #1513801 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark One of the whites of the vintage is the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc, a gorgeous, rich, layered effort that stays perfectly balanced and pure. Classic notes of white flowers, honeysuckle, white peach, and ample minerality all give way to a medium to full-bodied white that has loads of texture, good freshness, and a great finish. This is a brilliant Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc that makes a mockery of so many of the overly lean, fresh, so called elegant whites being produced today. Inner quote mark (8/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is a blend of 80% Clairette and 20% Roussanne, all barrel-fermented and aged in 30% new oak (briefly, as the wine was bottled in January). It features scents of honey, marmalade and delicate hints of peach and pineapple. Medium-bodied, it's silky in texture, with brine and citrus zest on the finish. Isabel Ferrando deserves enormous credit for raising the quality and image of this estate. In many ways, she epitomizes the wines she crafts, showing great generosity and elegance on the outside, while possessing a strong will and great ambition. The 2018 vintage wasn't an easy one here, with crop losses reaching 50%. The highlight for me of this year's visit was a chance to look back at a couple of the wines from 2009. There's no doubt in my mind that the wines Ferrando is making now surpass what she was doing at that time, and she seems to agree. "In ten years, I've progressed. My sensitivity to the terroir is much more now," she said. (JC) Inner quote mark (8/2019)

K&L Notes

Blend of Clairette & Rousanne... Isabel Ferrando bought the Domaine Saint Prefert and vinified for the first time in 2003. The estate is situated on the south side of the village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape atop gravel and pebble soils. Isabel Ferrando farms organically. She expanded her holdings and built a new state-of-the-art winery in 2009. Isabel's mentality is to never stop improving: "The substantial work done in the vineyards over the past eight years brings us ever closer to the level of quality that I seek. Progress is ahead of us."
