2018 LTL (Upchurch) Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1513144 93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Made by Chris Upchurch, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon showed beautifully, with a fruit forward, yet balanced, textured, seamless style that’s a joy to drink. Offering loads of red, blue, and black fruits as well as tobacco, scorched earth, and graphite, this medium to full-bodied, dense purple, flawlessly balanced Cabernet can be drunk today with incredible pleasure or cellared for at least 10-15 years. Inner quote mark (5/2021)

93 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Blackberries, spiced cherries, dried violets, cocoa and peppercorns on the nose. It’s full-bodied with firm, powdery tannins framing a deep core of spiced dark fruit. Balanced and layered. Drink from 2023. Inner quote mark (6/2021)

92 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Bright ruby-red. Sexy vibrant scents of dark berries, dark chocolate, dried herbs, toffee and mocha. Broad, plush and classically dry on the palate, with a dark chocolate quality contributing sweetness to the cassis, blackberry and espresso flavors. Wonderfully dense wine with the stuffing to easily support the broad tooth-saturating tannins. Finishes suave and very long, with no rough edges but enough structure for mid-term aging. Even today the wine offers plenty of sexy appeal, and it's a gift for thirty bucks. (ST) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Generous and dark-fruited in the glass, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with robust aromas of blackberry, black raspberry and grilled plums with elements of dried herbs and savory spice tones. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is balanced and has a lush mouthfeel that gives way to gripping tannins that will be food-friendly in youth. It ends with a long, winding finish with lasting flavors of bitter dark chocolate, damson fruit and roasted coffee beans. This still continues to be one of the best buys in all of Washington. Get it now before the price goes up. (AM) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

This wine is a total sleeper and is an embarrassment to many much more expensive wines from the region. Just browse the comments made by the critics above. I read a lot of wine reviews in my job, and rarely do I see a set of reviews so emphatically echoing each other. That's right—a richly fruited, textured, powerful Cabernet with ample structure and length for under $30. The "secret" here is that this wine is crafted by one of the best winemakers in the state, Chris Upchurch, and sourced from the finest vineyards in the region that typically go into MUCH more expensive bottlings. If you've enjoyed wines from DeLille, Col Solare, Quilceda Creek, Mark Ryan, etc., then you have to check out this wine. It hugely over-delivers on value for money and is a great bottle of Cab that you just can't have too much of.
Top Value!
