2016 Château de Montfaucon "Vin de Monsieur le Baron de Montfaucon" Lirac

SKU #1512704 92-94 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Unquestionably the star of the show is the 2016 Lirac Vin De Monsieur Le Baron, a mix of just about every permitted variety, several of which are white varieties. This ruby-colored beauty gives up more black fruits, chocolate, graphite, and spice. Full-bodied, rich, and powerful, with rock star volume and depth of fruit, it shows more and more tannins with time in the glass and I suspect will benefit from a year or two in bottle. It should age beautifully. Inner quote mark (9/2018)

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark This vintage is the first year to be sold as a Lirac instead of a table wine. The 2016 Lirac Vin de Mr Baron contains 16 different varieties, harvested in three different picks but all co-fermented in the same vat. It then spent the usual two years in barrel and was in tank when I visited. This medium to full-bodied wine shows extremely promising plum and licorice aromas and flavors, a rich, velvety texture and ample concentration, plus subtle accents of cedar and vanilla. If aging follows past practice, it should be released in 2021. (JC) Inner quote mark (11/2018)

92 points Decanter

Outer quote mark A cornucopia of spices and berry fruits on the nose, including raspberry, loganberry, clove and star-anise. Quite a tannic frame here, but ripe and very well balanced, with some serious length. The alcohol is slightly raised, but this isn't problematic in terms of balance. Impressive stuff. 91 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Charred earth and stony minerals juxtapose crisp, cutting blackberry and black currant flavors in this vital blend of 15 classic Rhône grapes, cofermented and matured in oak. It's vibrantly fruity but savory, too, edged by lingering veins of smoke and dried sage. Fine but firm tannins grip the finish. Ready now but should improve through 2025. (AI) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

K&L Notes

Composed of 15 Rhône varietals including Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Counoise, Mourvèdre, Muscat, Aubun, Alicante, Tempranillo and several others. Made to reflect a historic style of wine from the 19th century (the etching on the label also dates from this time), the wine is all hand harvested, co-fermented and racked straight into barrel for aging right after fermentation. Rodolphe de Pins, the current proprietor, has chosen to further age this wine in bottle so that it is perfectly ready to drink upon release. It is drinking beautifully now, with a lovely savory development showing, and all the structure integrated seamlessly into the dark, brooding fruit.
