2016 Bodegas Aleanna "Gran Enemigo" Cabernet Franc Chacayes

SKU #1512435 99 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Such impressive, rich aromas of berries, cherries and plums with blackberries and violets, too. An enticing fusion of freshness and deep intensity. The palate has a super succulent and contained feel with immaculately smooth, plush tannins. So long, pure and full of life. Like a top St.-Emilion! Inner quote mark (12/2020)

Outer quote mark There is more of everything in this 2016 Gran Enemigo Chacayes Single Vineyard. It's compact and seamless, with great purity, and more concentrated than the 2015 but with terrific balance, as the acidity (which is very high but you don't feel it) helps to counterbalance the massive palate and provide the necessary freshness. This is a beast that is going to age effortlessly for a good 15 years in bottle. All these wines age in used oak foudres for almost one-and-a-half years and are usually bottled around Christmas two years after the harvest. (LG) 96+ Inner quote mark (10/2019)

94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark A Cabernet Franc with 15% Malbec, both from Los Chacayes, Uco Valley, 30% macerated with whole bunches. Intense purple in the glass. The nose suggests ripe plums, violets and a hint of flesh. The sugary palate, typical of the region, is generous with its expression and intense flavor, while the body and structure are good without being at all restrictive. Contained potency and flavor just about sums it up. (JH) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

93 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Alejandro Vigil has made Cabernet Franc from four different vineyards in the Uco Valley and this one from the Los Chacayes GI has turned out to be the most wild and original of the quartet. A deep violet in colour, the floral nose offers a decent amount of red fruit, berries and spice from an ageing process that managed to tame the natural power of the terroir. Velvety in the mouth with juicy acidity and chalky tannins, this is a red for daring palates. (AI) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

K&L Notes

93 points Tim Atkin MW "Intensely, beguilingly aromatic, this is an 85/15 blend of Cabernet Franc and Malbec from Los Chacayes. Fermented with 20% whole bunches, it has aromas of clove and lavender, firm, sinewy tannins, very little oak, racy acidity, black cherry and raspberry fruit and some chalky minerality."

This is the first time this wine has been seen stateside, and we have all been jumping for joy! A defining wine for its genre, this is a display of Cabernet Franc that you rarely see and needs to be tasted to be believed! The nose explodes out of the glass with blueberries, blackberries, and every berry in between, followed by pie crust, anise, oregano, and a toasty oak. The palate is rich and almost oily, making your eyes roll back in your head with happiness! The berry comes through, but then this clean minerality cuts in followed by baking spice and savory meat. This is a wine for wine fans, and if you have the opportunity, you need to experience it!
