2018 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape

SKU #1512313 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark While there was no Vieilles Vignes bottling produced this vintage, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape stands out for its remarkable perfume of garrigue and spice, which epitomizes the complexity attainable solely from grapes in this remarkable appellation. Tendrils of dried herbs entwine raspberries and black cherries, accented by hints of Asian five-spice powder. It's medium to full-bodied and delicately dusty in feel, generous yet softly structured, with a lingering, elegant finish. Drink this beauty over the next decade or so. While fans of this biodynamically run estate will lament the absence of a Vieilles Vignes bottling in 2018, the flip side is that the regular bottling is one of the best produced in years, superbly concentrated and complex almost beyond description. Outer quote mark A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and the rest Syrah brought up in a mix of foudre and concrete tanks, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape reveals a slightly deeper ruby/purple hue to go with ripe, sexy aromas and flavors of red and black currants, roasted herbs, black licorice, and smoked meats. This big, rich, nicely concentrated 2018 has rock-solid mid-palate depth and sweet tannins and a great finish, all making for one seriously delicious Châteauneuf du Pape that’s going to drink nicely for 15+ years. K&L Notes

Marcoux is one of the benchmark producers in the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They were a pioneer in organic and biodyanmic farming back when the estate was created in 1989. Oenologist Sophie Estevenin continues to create some of the most beautifully balanced wines in the region with the help of her sister Catherine, who oversees the viticulture along with Sophie's son, Vincent. They farm just over 28 hectares, about 18 of which are in Châteauneuf. The cellar is modest, utilizing concrete and stainless steel tanks for fermentation. Some larger foudre (large oak barrels) are used for the white and Vieilles Vignes. The classic Marcoux is made up of primarily Grenache with bits of Syrah, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre rounding out the blend. It is always one of the top wines of any vintage and this one is no different.
