2018 Upchurch "Upchurch Vineyard" Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1511683 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Bursting from the glass with a plushy sensation of juicy blueberry, blackberry reduction, spiced plum sauce and beautiful, seductive oak tones that waft with the classic mineral essence of Red Mountain, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Upchurch Vineyard is perfumed and seduces the nose with each sniff. Full-bodied, generous and juicy, the mid-palate shows impeccable balance, with a generous amount of fruit-forwardness and managing to seamlessly weave into the 100% new French oak expression, showing lifting tannins and energetic acidity to make this wine last for two decades. Ending with a long, evolving finish, the wine continues to bring pleasure for moments after it has left the palate. This is a rockstar wine from a rockstar winemaker. (AM) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Dark cherries, hot stones, damp earth, dried violets and chocolate orange on the nose. It’s full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Concentrated and dense. This is a bigger style with lots of wood and rich fruit, so give it some time. Try from 2025. Inner quote mark (6/2021)

I'll pick up right where the Wine Advocate left off..."a Rockstar wine from a Rockstar winemaker." Chris Upchurch is undoubtedly one of the Washington's greatest winemakers of all time. His record of crafting simply stunning Bordeaux inspired wines (amongst other thigs) is long and decorated. As the founding winemaker of Delille, Upchurch now has three decades of winemaking under his belt and many of his wines are capable of lasting multiple decades also! His wines very much represent a fusion of more traditional Bordeaux like structure with a slightly more "new world" concentration to the fruit profile. Chris' eponymous venture - Upchurch - is based on his own "First Growth" site on the slopes of Red Mountain. After spending all those years working with the best fruit in the state, he decided that this singular terroir offered something truly unique and world class and has doubled down on this vineyard. The 2018 is beautiful even in its youth. Brimming with creme de cassis, crushed blackberry, scorched earth, subtle licorice and and shaved cedar. This luxurious fruit is all wrapped up in very sophisticated, exotic, oak tones from the top notch Taransaud cooperage. The wine has plenty of structure underneath the suave fruit, but the tannis are so fine and beautifully polished there's nothing hard or astringent about the wine. From past experience of Chris' wines I have no doubt that this will be a 25-30+ year wine. World-class stuff.
