2017 Alpha Estate "Hedgehog Vineyard" Xinomavro Amyndeon Greece

SKU #1511235 91 points Decanter

Outer quote mark This elegant wine's impressive allspice and raisiny characters, fine-grained, grippy tannins and mouthwatering acidity make for a lovely bottle that will age well. (2020 DWWA) Inner quote mark (8/2020)

Outer quote mark The 2017 Xinomavro Hedgehog Vineyard was aged for 12 months in an equal mixture of used and new French barriques. It comes in at 13.8% alcohol. Always a great value in the lineup, and very consistent, this provides earthy complexity, power and a bright finish. The mid-palate tends to be not as impressive, but this hardly feels thin. It is nicely textured as well, silky at times and velvety most always. The best part, though, is its juicy energy. It is a little mouthwatering. This is not, of course, a sweet and fruity wine—it's more classic Xinomavro, with its fair share of tannins and acidity. At the same time, it is very balanced, vaguely approachable even now. It was pretty fine the next day. It should come along well, though, if you can give it a year or so to settle down. It is balanced and the tannins are not overly hard. It's another fine effort in this brand, which is always a good source for value. It should age well. (MS) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

91 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark Culled from the younger vines on Angelo Iatridis’s estate, this is a bright, juicy modern Xinomavro with lots of ripe, creamy strawberry flavor. Floral notes of rose and pink peppercorn give it lift and elegance. Inner quote mark (8/2020)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Lively and peppery on the nose, lightly herbal (I could imagine there were some stems in here but I don't know if that is likely with Xinomavro) but still with lovely red-cherry fruit, quite a delicate fragrance for this variety. A little bit smoky/stony too. Incredibly juicy on the palate with really refined tannins and terrific freshness. Real purity here with the fruit dominating the oak in a succulent and refined whole. And clearly much more complexity to come as there's very little tertiary development yet. 17+/20 points (JH) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

I have been singing the praises of Greek whites for some time but there are also several Greek reds that are worthy of your attention. The Alpha "Hedgehog" is one such bottling and is the finest and most fun example of a Xinomavro I have tasted in some time. Xinomavro is often called the Nebbiolo of Greece, and with its high acidity and sometimes muscular tannins, it is hard not to see why. But this Xino, while having many of those qualities, has a freshness and lively fruit quality that distinguishes it from the pack. It is a pure and joyful expression that is humming with strawberry jam, red flowers, potpourri, and dried spices. It has a bright fleshiness that is inviting and a medium bodied texture that counters the light grip of the tannins. This is great drinking Xinomavro that is wonderfully accessible and puts Greece's reds in a whole new light.
