1995 Aberlour 25 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Hogshead Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

The gorgeous little distillery at the entrance of the tiny town of the same name has quietly become one of the Scotch-loving world's darlings. The distillery, owned by blending giant Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard), was built in 1879 and features two 21 thousand-liter wash stills and a pair each of spirits stills, 20 and 15 thousand liters. The distillery's name means "mouth of the babbling brook," and indeed a stream meanders next to the distillery, but the distillery's water comes from Ben Rinnes like many of the other distilleries around the famous mountain. We've never been offered a barrel of Aberlour, much less one of such astonishing age. While the distillery itself has been focused on NAS bottlings like their popular A'Bunadh series, the older expressions have become extremely rare. This single hogshead was selected not only for the incredible provenance and rarity, but also its extreme deliciousness. Unlike many modern Aberlours, which have become synonymous with hardcore sherry, this is much more nuanced and idiosyncratic. While by no means a value buy, it does represent a malt that is otherwise unobtainable at nearly any price and its inherent quality and unique character easily merit the price of entry. Only 184 bottles came out of this old hogshead. It was bottled at cask strength without chill-filteration or coloring of any kind.

The big name in from the tiny town of the same name is actually not a very big place at all. Tucked in the corner at the entrance of town, it's as picturesque as any in Speyside. The old Victorian buildings a clue to the noble history of this special distillery. We can't get single cask from Aberlour itself and I've only once been offered the distillery previously. It was a similarly old cask, but would have retailed for over $600. With that in mind, we had to take a stab at this gorgeous little barrel considering the pedigree and prices on the market, but also due simply to the inherent quality. The color is pale gold. It's absolute bevy of yellow orchard fruit at first mirabelle, quince, granny smith. Then comes some biscuit-y stuff - Walker's Shortbread I think. On the palate the texture is very velvety. Silken and sumptuous, it's got a building herbal side, bits of licorice, wormwood, fresh grass, bitter lemon peel. The finish is long and tingling on the edge of astringent but remaining completely palatable even at this high proof. Now with a bit of water we totally open things up. The nose is now packed full of ripe melon, lychee, passion fruit, yuzu. Undeniably better with a bit of water, but a very stark change. The palates herbal quality has moved toward the menthol and it’s an incredible contrast to the very bold nose. It finishes with some cocoa and a hint of cinnamon. An absolutely dream of a dram that Aberlour lovers will find oddly familiar in a way that's very difficult to pinpoint.

My notes could not be published in the New York Times I'm afraid - They are not fit for print. A string of flabbergasted expletives came dribbling out of my mouth and pen when I nosed this, tasted this, and retasted this. I will clean them up here: The nose is jam packed with ripe fruits smothered in freshly whipped vanilla cream. Berries and bursting ripe Satsuma Mandarin flash back and forth. If you ever get around to sipping it (and you should) intense ginger spice will fight against the sweet cream and fruit. Licorice will assert itself at one point. All spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, cracked pepper, and more fruit - always more fruit will all command your attention in turn. Succulent peaches and apricots will drip across your palate like a hot summer day. It goes on forever. The finish clings to your palate like melted butter. It's nuts. Rarely do we get to bottle a cask from this special distillery, and never has it been this old. This is quite possibly the whisky of the year at K&L.
