K&L Notes

92 points Tim Atkin, MW: "The cooler vintage definitely makes a difference here on this pure Malbec from Mayor Drummond. Fresh and well balanced, with stylishly applied one-third new wood, floral elegance, some vanilla spice and the combination of red and black fruits that’s typical of 2018 Malbecs."

This has a mouth watering nose. One sniff and I am thinking about how good this wine is going to be with a skirt steak! And the nose is not the best part of this wine! This is all black berries, with a little plum and some boysenberries up front and just a suggestion of savory herbs, stones and violets peeking out from behind them. The palate is where this wine shines. It is rich and fresh and there is just enough oak to spice frame all the fruit that the nose hinted at. The fruit exists in a perfect place just between juicy and jammy. The tannins are soft and creamy and it is when you feel their slight grip on the finish the stones and flowers flavors start to make their appearance. I cannot wait to have this with steak, just the thought of it makes my mouth water, or is that the finish on the wine? Regardless this another delicious offering from Mendel, who excels at making wines that way over perform for the price point. Enjoy with or without steak, I will, it takes at least a half glass to prepare dinner, right?

I think I may have found the answer to "what in the world do I pair with peppers?". The 2018 Mendel threw me for a loop when we opened it and after the surprise of the first nosing it was really refreshing to have a Malbec that was offering something really different! The nose opens with roasted jalapeno and olives, under which lies that dark luscious fruit and purple flower. the palate is rich with all the fruit right up front which fades into a salty brine on the finish that is really mouthwatering! If you need a red wine to go with barbecue, stuffed peppers, or anything spicy this is a ringer!

Plummy, juicy goodness. Dark fruit, tomato leaf and black stone are carried on a medium body with easy tannins. The bright fruit tones are buttressed by lilac and hibiscus floral tones that add an X-factor to this wine that's as simple as it is delicious. Easy to pair, the lighter-than-normal-for-malbec body lets this hang out with chicken and veggie dishes as expected but also dip into the heavy salads that have become a lockdown staple.
