2008 Glengoyne 11 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive PX Sherry Finished Single Cask Strength Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1510027

Glengoyne is all about patience. Everything they do is slow. The picturesque little distillery sits on the border of the Highlands and Lowlands. In fact, the road that divides the distillery and its warehouses IS the border. They sport some of the longest fermentation times in all of Scotland and some of the slowest stills as well. These longer processes coupled with a massive amount of available copper lead to an unabashedly fruity and super clean spirit. The real magic of Glengoyne is in the fact that it retains enough stuffing to play perfectly with heavy sherry influences. Indeed, the distillery bottlings nearly all focus on sherry maturation. This particular exclusive bottling from Old Particular has been finished in PX sherry, leading to the very best of both worlds. Not only do you get the ripe stone fruits and vanillas of the spirit and hogshead maturation, you also get to savor the deep, sweet, nutty flavors of Spain’s finest dessert wine and Scotch fans' favorite finishing cask.

This fun little cask is proof that color is not important. Often we associate PX sherry with really dark color, but obviously there's a huge host of styles being made in Jerez and while many are stick and coffee dark, others are more medium colored, but of course still very sweet. We purchased this cask after tasting it during our 2019 campaign, but the bottler was unable to get it on that shipment, so it's sat for another year before arriving in California. But just because we don't have that very dark color doesn't mean you’re not getting all the gorgeous PX influence, it does nonetheless have an attractive red hue. The color is amontillado sherry. The nose pops with stewed yellow plums, dark red berries and cashew butter. The sherry is there but it's being tamed slightly by the gorgeous malt, spice and vanillas. On the palate, the reverse is true. The sherry wins the front palate with the big vanilla extract, deep red fruit and spice being pushed to the back palate. With a nice dollop of water the rolls seemed reversed again! The nuttiness dominates the nose, moving toward fresh almond, while on the palate the vibrant fruit begins to speak. This will be a huge disappointment for anyone expecting chocolate, prunes and maple syrup, but for almost everyone else this will be an absolutely awesome SCORE! Very taste-y and very well priced for the quality indeed.

This bottling should appeal to those who like sherry influenced single malts that are not full bodied but are elegant and subtle. There are wonderful dried fruit and honey flavors that area balanced and delicate. Sweet notes dominate the finish. This single malt is better with a splash of water.

Finished in a PX sherry cask this stately Glengoyne offers up tremendous sweetness and a crystal clear golden raisin note on the finish. Glengoyne's one of the finest examples of a malt that takes to heavy sherry influence without losing it's own character. Unlike the more robust Speysider's of sherried fame, Glengoyne, situated on the line between Highland and Lowland both physically and stylistically does it through complement with it's lighter, very clean and clear fruity style. The color is a striking amber. The nose shows an almost sherry vinegar like complexity with a zip up front and a wide array of dried fruits to go with an oxidative and nutty, thick and rich feel. Spicier on the midpalate than many Glengoyne's there is a gingersnap kick to it. The finish is a sweet and complex amalgamation of everything that came before. The golden raisin in particular lingers forever.
