Gianna Kelly, a Sonoma County native, got her degree in chemistry while finding her love for wine. She landed a job at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars where she could hone her skills for Cabernet Sauvignon. Her reputation spread which resulted in her rising to new heights as assistant winemaker at both Cardinale and Lokoya; two of Napa Valley's most incredible Cabernet Sauvignon based wineries. Now, as head wine maker at Galerie, she can explore several important sub appellations of Napa. The "Latro" bottling is sourced from Knights Valley. This is a cooler climate, located at the base of Mount St. Helena northwest of Napa Valley.

This Cab is about as seamless as they come. Sourced from vineyards located in the same area as the legendary Peter Michael reds (which sell for well north of $100), the Galerie Cab is a wine that punches well above its price tag. When I first tasted the wine, I knew immediately we were onto something special. There was a very refined and regal aspect to the aromatics, berries and herbs and a hint of wood spice. While fully developed in the glass the wine is silky smooth on the palate. Eventually I decided to save the rest of the bottle for dinner. Once home I poured it into a decanter as I prepared an American Wagyu steak from Snake River Farms. I delicately seared all four sides of the cut in my cast iron pan and let sit for a few minutes as I poured the wine into my glass. I was surprised to see just how much the wine has opened and how complex it had become. Together, the steak and the Cab made for a perfect combination. I'll be revisiting that duet very soon. I strongly urge you to do the same.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.

- America's most famous wine region, which encompasses a varied geographical territory running about 20 miles long from the San Francisco Bay northward to the foot of Mount St. Helena.
