2019 M. Chapoutier "L'Ermite" Ermitage Blanc (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1509257 100 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2019 Ermitage L’Ermite Blanc comes all from the l'Hermite lieu-dit located up above the Le Méal and around the Chapelle, which is a mix of granite and limestone soils. This cuvée sees a touch more new oak and is brought up 90% in 25% new demi-muids and 10% in stainless steel tanks. It's a more chiseled, backward (which is usual) wine that has intense white currants and stone fruits as well as brilliant honeysuckle, licorice, and celery seed nuances, with a liqueur of rocks-like minerality. With flawless balance, full-bodied richness, and a powerful, concentrated, structured style on the palate, hide bottles for 8-10 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 30 years. Outer quote mark The star of Chapoutier's white Hermitage lineup this year is the 2019 Ermitage l'Ermite Blanc, which manages to marry tremendous ripeness and power with structural ribs of granite. Hints of flamed citrus zest appear on the nose alongside pear, melon and pineapple shadings, while the medium to full-bodied palate is open and generous, yet supported and shaped by tremendous underlying dry extract and what Michel Chapoutier describes as "noble bitterness." Notes of crushed stone and citrus zest linger endlessly on the finish, which positively reverberates with low-key energy that's in perfect harmony with the richness and opulence on display. This is delicious now, but I suspect it will be better—like many top white Hermitages—in 10-15 years. At the time these wines were submitted, Michel Chapoutier had yet to bottle his 2018 reds, so the selection is limited to his outstanding collection of 2019 white wines. If you've got the resources, don't miss the 2019 L'Ermite Blanc, a stunning example of white Hermitage. (JC) Inner quote mark (5/2021)

Outer quote mark Very opulent for L’Ermite with a lower acidity than normal. The granitic freshness really helps in this vintage and you can somehow smell the saltiness. Intense petrichor, it's floral but with pear and a touch of quince. There is salt spray freshness in the place of acidity and a great mineral, fresh drive underneath. 90% aged in demi-muids, 10% in stainless steel. (MW) Inner quote mark (10/2020)
