2016 Grattamacco "L'Alberello" Bolgheri Superiore

SKU #1509216 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark This wine delivers an exceptional quality of fruit. The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore l'Alberello is vinous and raw with an unmistakably authentic quality that gives this wine character and a specific territorial identity. You taste the flavors of the Tuscan Coast with that "macchia mediterrana," or Mediterranean brush, with ripe cherry, plum, black olive and sweet cinnamon spice. At this young stage, the wine's oak imprint is evident, but we can look forward to this relaxing and tapering down with more bottle age. (ML) Inner quote mark (5/2019)

Outer quote mark Some maturity in the colour. Slightly uplifted floral nose, with notes of violets next to ripe dark fruit and Mediterranean scrub. Solid palate with weight and breadth in the weave, very natural grape tannins and a long, dry, savoury finish. Classic. (RB) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

Outer quote mark I love the herbal complexity with dark brambleberries, fresh herbs and cedar. Medium to full body, juicy and endearing tannins and a floral finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold. Inner quote mark (11/2019)

Outer quote mark A blend of cabernet sauvignon with some cabernet franc and petit verdot, this comes from a five-acre vineyard planted in 2004, one of Bolgheri’s few plots to use the alberello training system. The three varieties are harvested on the same day and cofermented spontaneously with ambient yeasts before resting for 16 months in French oak barriques (50 percent new). The result is an earthy wine with concentrated dark-berry flavors accented by notes of tobacco, black olive and roasted mushroom. The wine brightens over time, taking on hints of eucalyptus and menthol while sneaky acidity freshens the dense, chewy texture. A bit intense at present, this should benefit from a few years in the cellar. Inner quote mark (8/2019)

92 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Expressive and typical aromas of black currant, cedar, olive, iron and tobacco mark this medium-bodied and balanced red, well-rippled with tannins. Offers a fine, lingering aftertaste of fruit, cedar and mineral. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. (BS) Inner quote mark (8/2019)
