Grapes for this Chardonnay are sourced from a number of top vineyards across the central coast: Bien Nacido, Pedregal, Zabala and Laetitia. On the 2018 vintage, the winery notes: "The quality of the 2018 growing season on California’s Central Coast was fantastic. After warm early spring weather led to an early budbreak, the temperatures cooled in late-spring, followed by sunny days with moderate temperatures throughout the summer. This provided us with some of the longest hangtimes we have ever seen in a few of our Central Coast vineyards, which resulted in beautifully ripe flavors overall. At the same time, the temperate weather allowed the fruit to retain ideal acidity, yielding vibrant and complex wines, with excellent structure and alluring flavors."

Anyone looking for a chardonnay for daily drinking should stop here. This is the one. At $15 this is a fantastic deal that is an easy case purchase. Calera is located in the middle of nowhere in the Gabilan Mountains, and built into the side of an old limestone quarry, with vineyards planted in 1975. This is a historical and legendary winery for many reasons. Their entry level bottling is the Central Coast Chardonnay which is produced from purchased fruit from top vineyards such as Bien Nacido, Pedregal, Zabala and Laetitia. The wine is made at their estate winery and is made using small-production methods. There is some toast and oak with a little leesy character and really nice balance of fruit and acid. This is classic California Chardonnay. Highly recommended!

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine.
