2016 Siduri "Soberanes Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir (Elsewhere $58)

SKU #1509068 93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark From a site right next to Garys' that was planted in 2008, the 2016 Pinot Noir Soberanes Vineyard was completely destemmed and spent 11 months in 40% new French oak. It's a rich, voluptuous effort that has loads of mulberries, cranberries, spicy herbs, and underbrush aromas and flavors. Deep, medium to full-bodied and just loaded with fruit, it's a pleasure-bent effort that also has balance and class. Inner quote mark (2/2019)

Outer quote mark An expressive bouquet of red and blue fruits, cola, candied rose and vanilla carries an intense mineral overtone. Concentrated yet energetic in the mouth, showing excellent clarity and strong thrust to the spice-laced black raspberry, boysenberry and floral pastille flavors. Becomes nervier on the gently tannic finish, which hangs on with impressive, minerally tenacity. (JR) Inner quote mark (10/2018)

Outer quote mark Sultry and elegantly integrated aromas of purple flower and black raspberry decorate the nose of this single-vineyard expression by veteran Adam Lee. Pungent fruit shows on the palate, where baked black cherry and boysenberry are lifted by wild thyme and chaparral spice. (MK) Inner quote mark (12/2018)

Outer quote mark The 2016 Pinot Noir Soberanes Vineyard is pale to medium ruby-purple in color with a concentrated nose of licorice, black cherry, blackberry and blueberry with notes of turned earth and bergamot plus floral hints. Light to medium-bodied, it has great concentration of fruits and earthy layers in the mouth, with good structuring, grainy tannins and juicy freshness carrying the finish. This is plush and mellow with earthy strawberry and jammy black cherry fruit along with potpourri and spice. There is a lot of wine here that shows a great dig into the terroir of this vineyard, particularly on the mineral and acid balanced finish.

A fascinating bottle of wine bottle from one of the masters of this appellation, Siduri winemaker, Adam Lee. This wine shows exactly what this region is known for, powerful Pinot Noir with great concentration and presence on the palate. Soberanes Vineyard was planted and is farmed by Gary Pisoni and Gary Franscioni. The vineyard sits immediately adjacent to the legendary Garys' vineyard, one of the marquee sites of the entire region. Sharing the same terroir, after learning from decades of farming Garys' Vineyard, Soberanes was planted with tighter vine spacing and finely tuned row orientation, this site now produces some of the most highly sought after fruit in the Santa Lucia highlands. Siduri's 2016 bottling has dense, powerful, red and black fruit. Dark cherry, macerated loganberry, spice box, crushed rock and bramble. Hints of cocoa powder and oak spice linger on the palate. A savory, smoky, mineral streak runs throughout. Drinking very nicely now and clearly has 5-10 years ahead of it, maybe more. An absolute steal at this price.
