2012 Louis Roederer et Philippe Starck "Nature" Brut Champagne

SKU #1508784 94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This has a very fresh and pure, lemony nose and is completely mouth-filling. Then it freshens and composes and takes a fine, flinty, acidity-chiseled and dry ride to the finish. Super refreshing and saline. From biodynamically grown grapes – 55% pinot noir, 25% chardonnay and 20% pinot meunier. Inner quote mark (7/2019)

Outer quote mark Coming after 2006 and 2009, this is the third vintage of Roederer’s Brut Nature, a wine Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon makes in collaboration with Philippe Starck. Its production is determined by the years when pinot noir, meunier and chardonnay ripen at the same time, so they can be harvested together and cofermented. It grows in the clay soils of Cumières, what Lécaillon describes as “the dark side,” a contrast to the chalk terroirs that provide Cristal. The 2012 starts out with earth tones, scents of mushrooms and dark spice. And like prior vintages of this wine, it keeps gaining complexity with each successive day open. From a tough and powerful structure, it turns luscious, generous, its flavors of white nectarine carried with a youthfully staccato energy. It’s a wine to decant, or to cellar. Outer quote mark Six years on the lees before disgorgement has produced a Champagne that is just approaching perfect maturity. It is dry but that dryness has now softened with the developing nuttiness. This wine, developed as a collaboration with designer Philippe Starck, is now ready to drink. Outer quote mark First made in 2006, the 2012 Starck Brut Nature offers a ripe, sexy bouquet of green apples, green almonds, white flowers, and chalky minerality. It has bright acidity, medium to full body, terrific balance, and a clean, lengthy finish. A blend of 55% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier, and the rest Chardonnay, it’s going to evolve gracefully for 10-15 years. Inner quote mark (7/2020)

Outer quote mark This is now the third release of the Brut Nature Millésime from Louis Roederer, following the 2006 and 2009 vintages. As I have noted in the past, it is only produced in riper vintages, so as to ensure that there is good, ripe acids to work with, as there is no buffering dosage in the wine. The cépages of the 2012 is a bit different than the previous two releases (which were essentially one-third each of the three varieties), with the blend composed of fifty-five percent pinot noir, twenty-five percent pinot meunier and twenty percent chardonnay this year, and has been the case in the past, the vins clairs do not undergo malolactic fermentation. The 2012 offers up a fine, young nose of pear, apple, lemon zest, chalky minerality and a lovely topnote of spring flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and racy in personality, with a fine core, lovely mineral drive, refined mousse and a long, beautifully balanced and extremely promising finish. For Brut Nature purists, this is already drinking very well, but for those of us weaned on a bit of dosage, I would give it two or three more years in the cellar to really let it open up from behind its girdle of acidity and drink with a touch more generosity. It will be a very long-lived Brut Nature vintage from Louis Roederer. Inner quote mark (11/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2012 Brut Nature is showing beautifully, bursting from the glass with an expressive bouquet of lemon oil, crisp green apple, wheat toast, hazelnuts and wet stones. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with its generous core of concentrated and delicately sun-kissed fruit girdled by brisk acids and undeniable mineral grip and complemented by a delicate pinpoint mousse. Concluding with a saline finish, this lovely wine is a blend of 55% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier and 20% Chardonnay, reflecting its origins in Cumières. (WK) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

Outer quote mark This finely knit Champagne crackles with mouthwatering acidity, while the satiny mousse swathes the palate, carrying flavors of crunchy pear, rich grilled nut, white cherry and a touch of honeycomb. Long and creamy on the minerally, saline-laced finish. (AN) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

Outer quote mark This Brut Nature is a Champagne collaboration imagined by French designer Philippe Starck and elaborated by Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, Roederer's chef de cave. Made with 55% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier and 20% Chardonnay from Premier Cru vineyards in Cumières, it has a lively and intense bouquet of peach, citrus, and spring flower aromas. Tense and taut on the palate, this 2012 is just entering its first plateau of maturity. (YC) Inner quote mark (11/2019)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Very sparky and saline. Punchy. Bone dry. Perky. Mineral and chewy. Not flattering – challenging rather. Personally, I’d prefer just a tad more fruit but it’s a valid style, the most difficult wine Lécaillon makes, he says. ‘I made the mistake of thinking initially that oak would bring sweetness. It doesn’t. It brings tannins. Dosage hides tannins as well as adding sweetness.’ This may mellow into something more glorious. 16.5+/20 points (JR) Inner quote mark (6/2019)
