2019 La Caña Albariño Rías Baixas

SKU #1507864 93 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A very precise and well made white with cooked apple, spicy pear and some crushed-cement character. Medium to full body with tangy acidity that gives tension to the pretty fruit. Inner quote mark (10/2020)

90 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Dry-farmed, hand-harvested and with 25% of the blend fermented with wild yeast, this is a showcase of citrus fruit, where grapefruit, lime and lemon zest mingle on a creamy-textured palate thanks to eight months of lees ageing. The bright intensity carries through the finish with balance and elegance. (SS) Inner quote mark (9/2020)

90 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This focused, elegant white has a distinctive briny undertone accenting the apple, ginger and peach flavors. Savory elements of spice and herb fine-tune the mouthwatering finish. (GS) Inner quote mark (7/2021)

K&L Notes

Bodegas La Cana is the newest joint project from Jorge Ordonez and the Gil family of Jumilla. The vines were planted in 1966 in the northern part of Rias Baixas close to the Atlantic ocean. The classic sandy soils of the region and cool climate produce a vibrant wine of tremendous acidity and complexity. The wine is partially barrel fermented and all of it spends time sur lie to enhance the richness of the varietal. It has a range of citrus flavors, stony minerality and a mouthwatering finish.

Wonderfully aromatic and entirely enjoyable, this’ll do nicely for winter crab feeds and has more than enough to it to last well into next year’s spring picnic and summer BBQ cycle. Floral, zesty and clean – this is albarino for the uninitiated, friendly but still with a pleasant, refreshing cut at the end of the palate that drives toward the next bite. Lemon juice and blossom and oyster shell, wonderfully muddled that roll into a herbal mid palate and then all show back up again for the finish. Very cheerful juice.
