2018 Xanadu "Estate" Chardonnay Margaret River Western Australia

SKU #1507690 95 points James Halliday

Outer quote mark Excellent intensity and length. Green pineapple, stone fruit, steel and cedar wood flavours crash authoritatively through the mouth. No doubting its variety, no doubting its region. There's a piercing aspect to the finish but it brings flavour right along with it. Inner quote mark (8/2020)

94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This is a very intense, fresh style with ripe peaches and grilled lemons, as well as toasted hazelnuts. The pithy depth is so attractive, really mouth-watering and juicy. Inner quote mark (3/2020)

There is no winery in Margaret River that has had a journey like Xanadu’s. Established back in 1977, Xanadu had made middling wines for decades as their vineyards slowly fell into disrepair. In 2005, the property was purchased by Douglas Rathbone, who spared absolutely no expense in his ambitions to turn this dilapidated property into a Margaret River icon. Rathbone’s efforts culminated in the 2016 “Estate” Cabernet which won the Jimmy Watson Award--Australia’s most prestigious wine award, in 2018. In my opinion, the 2018 Xanadu “Estate” Cabernet is every bit as good as the award winning wine from two years ago. Blackberry fruit, graphite, cedar and bay leaf all intertwine within the glass, placed in a dense frame of soften tannins and rich fruit. This is one of the most dependable and consistent producers at its price point
