2018 Gainey Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

SKU #1505748 93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2018 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills is a fabulous Sta. Rita Hills Pinot. Racy and explosive, the 2018 packs a serious punch. Juicy dark red/purplish berry fruit, mint, lavender, spice and licorice notes are all pushed forward. Even with all of its fruit intensity, the 2018 retains terrific freshness and plenty of verve. It's the sort of wine that disappears in an instant at the dinner table. (AG) Inner quote mark (8/2020)

Outer quote mark This entry-level bottling from the historic winery is always a solid choice for everyday sipping, starting with aromas of dark hibiscus, wild berry, sumac and spicy cinnamon. The herbal palate offers bay leaf and dried sagebrush against a core of black plum and tart cranberry. *Editor's Choice* (MK) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

A simply spectacular value for money in Pinot Noir and a faithful representation of exactly why Sta. Rita Hills Pinot is so special. Gainey are one of those producers that somewhat fly under the radar. However, this family, now in their 4th generation of farming in Santa Barbara, have extensive estate plantings going back to 1984. Being early believers in this relatively young winegrowing region, their three ranches are set in absolutely prime locations with neighbors such as Melville, Brewer-Clifton, Kessler-Haak and Clos Pepe. Now you know you're looking at top quality vineyards and multi-generational farming, lets look at the wine itself. Crafted by highly skilled winemakers John Falcone and Jeff Lebard, who have 50 years of experience between them. The winemaking is subtle but precise. Nothing is forced. The wine has a wonderfully natural flow, purity and balance. Exotic floral tones lead with toasted spices, bramble, dark berries and subtle earthy notes. Some more dusty, red fruited elements show with air. Elegant and juicy on the palate, very quaffable and moreish. I see exactly what Galloni was talking about when he wrote "It's the sort of wine that disappears in an instant at the dinner table." It certainly didn't last long in my house! Fantastic Pinot Noir that's honestly worth twice the price.
