2013 Acumen "PEAK - Attelas Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1505725 Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Attelas was planted in 1992 at 1,350 ft elevation in Atlas Peak AVA. Organically farmed – certified in 2016. Volcanic soils. 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Malbec. The 2013 Peak Attelas has less Cabernet than all subsequent vintages in order to better distinguish it from the Peak red, since in 2013 they were the only two wines. From 2014 forward the Peak Attelas has a higher proportion of Cabernet as is more representative of the vineyard proportions. Pleasing blend of fruits and herbs, tree bark and crushed rocks with dusty iron accents from nose through palate. Incredibly palate stimulating with a long savoury finish. A nice delivery of rich flavour with fresh, mountain character yet the fine execution of quality bordeaux – that is, it offers an intersection of distinctly Napa mountain flavour, structure, and freshness with the elegant, layered, density of bordeaux craftsmanship. Impressive tannin execution – fine grained and still lightly tactile with a palate-stimulating effect washed through mouth-watering freshness. Nicely done and delicious. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Peak Attelas Vineyard shows slightly sweeter blueberry and blackberry fruit and riper tannins in a medium to full-bodied, elegant and savory style. It is slightly different from the single-vineyard, and consists of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Tannins are ripe and well-integrated with the wood pushed way to the background. This is a medium to full-bodied, impressive wine from Acumen to drink over the next 10-15 years. Dusty Cabernet Sauvignon flavors of cassis, plums and mulberries. Some high quality oak notes too. There is a nice vein of minerality that runs through this wine and accentuates the texture on the palate. This shows the more elegant side of what Napa Valley is capable of producing. It is classy and refined, and is in a great drinking window, having had a number of years of bottle age to soften the wine so that it is drinking very well right now. This is a great deal for under $100 in Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and I would drink now without hesitation and expect the wine to age effortlessly for at least another decade. This would be a perfect wine to drink with the upcoming holiday fare.

The 2013 Acumen "Peak - Attelas Vineyard" Cabernet is a wine of pure class and pedigree. This wine eschews any sense of over the top ripeness or extraction in favor of purity, sense of place, varietal typicity, balance and poise. Whilst hailing from the high slopes of Atlas Peak, in style this wine has more in common with classical left bank Bordeaux than modern day Napa Cab. A deep brick red in the glass with ruby hues; the nose gives off wonderful wisps of redcurrant, bay leaf, cigar box, pencil shavings, struck rock and dry soil. With time in the glass darker notes of cassis, and camphor emerge. These characters recur on the palate as gentle waves of flavor lap against refined structural tannins. Deep red fruits, earthy undertones and volcanic minerality from Atlas Peak's rugged rocky soils. The wine is medium plus bodied with fine, elegant texture and supple mouth feel from 5+ years maturation in bottle. This is such a wonderful wine to savor. You can smell, taste, and feel the old-world refinement and elegance the late-great Denis Malbec instilled into this bottling. An emerging superstar winemaker, born and raised at Château Latour where is father was cellar master, on a path to make some of Napa Valley's finest wines of a generation before he sadly passed away at just 46 years of age. Yet his legacy lives on in this bottle. A winery direct deal means we can bring you this absolutely eye opening Cabernet for a song. Share it this holiday season with family and friends or keep it in the cellar for the next 10-15 years...either way you'll be very happy you did.
Drink from 2018 to 2035
