2018 Luigi Pira Langhe Nebbiolo

SKU #1505593 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Gianpaolo Pira runs the Luigi Pira winery today. His 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo (with 6,000 bottles made) shows some ripeness with cherry skin, wild berry, pressed rose and some iron-rich soil. These results are simple and sharp, rendering an authentic and naked expression of the Nebbiolo grape. (ML) Inner quote mark (7/2020)

Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo is an attractive entry-level offering from Pira. Crushed flowers, mint, dried cherry, iron and leather add nuance to a Langhe Nebbiolo that has quite a bit of muscle. Then again, we are in Serralunga. (AG) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

An interesting nose of lavender, rosemary and cola berry. Slight hints of oak, with bright red fruits and minerals. Dry on the palate, largely due to the minerality, with red/black fruits and a touch of fig. Black cherries dominate. Long finish with fine tannins. Opened up very nicely after decanting for a bit.

This opens with aromas of crushed flowers, dried cherry and musky underbrush. The wine is lithe and fruity with impeccable balance and a persistent and dry finish of fine tannin. A great food wine but after decanting very easy to drink on its own.

Medium to full-bodied and very supple with over ripe cherries, blackberries, bitter-sweet chocolate and lots on minerals with soft tannins. This wine has such great structure it will stand the test of time, the big problem will be keeping enough around to potently age it. Thinking risottos dishes or a grilled Portobello mushroom, honestly I am actually drinking this one all by itself with some dried cheese & salami.
