2018 Martin Ray Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1504708 95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Loads of forest floor, mushrooms, leaves and dark fruit on the nose. It’s full-bodied with juicy fruit and chewy tannins. Hints of toasted oak and cedar, too. This is a structured red that needs two or three years to soften, then you can give it a go. Best Santa Cruz Mountains Cab for a long time from here. Inner quote mark (10/2020)

K&L Notes

Martin Ray is made in the old Martini & Prati winery by Courtney Benham, founder of Blackstone Winery. His collection of appellation Cabernets, from Napa Valley's Stag's Leap District, Howell Mountain, and Santa Cruz Mountains, are fine values, making this label something of a special discovery.

Very rarely does a Cabernet of this stature come along at this price point. I mean as soon as you smell the wine it's instantly clear there is some serious fruit in here. This was confirmed by the team at Martin Ray when they divulged that the majority of this wine comes from the highly revered Fellom Ranch vineyard directly adjacent to Ridge's Monte Bello vineyard. The nose is dominated by dark red and black fruits, smoky spices, ferrous earth tones and pipe tobacco. Briary, forest notes mingle with the deeply saturated fruit. These beautiful aromas are mirrored on the palate with black raspberry, cassis, preserved damson, charred oak spice and a brooding dry earth character. Dense and structured but not overly extracted, this is powerful Cab but without undue ripeness, sweetness or jammy qualities. Very open and expressive now, but undoubtedly will age for 10-15 years in the cellar no problem. It really is an unfathomably layered and exquisite Cab for the money.
