2018 Domaine du Pegau "Cuvée Réservée" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

SKU #1504163 96 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Grown on varied lieux-dits around the appellation on a mix of soils, this was fermented in concrete then aged for 24 months in foudre. All whole bunch, which is evidenced by the pleasantly stemmy aromatics. Very full-bodied and concentrated, savoury despite the oak, with bay leaf and thyme. Very tannic, quite hard on the palate in fact. It's well balanced despite the alcohol, thanks to its concentration and intensity. It's an outlying style due to its darkness, hardness and brooding character. It will be fantastic in time however. But wait. (MW) Inner quote mark (2/2021)

Outer quote mark Smoky, mineral-tinged aromas of raspberry, cherry preserves, garrigue and exotic spices show excellent clarity and acquire a gamy nuance as the wine opens up. At once rich and energetic in character, offering well-concentrated red berry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors and a sweetening touch of candied lavender. Shows fine definition and finishes gently, spicy and impressively long, with repeating florality and steadily building tannins. (JR) Inner quote mark (10/2021)

Outer quote mark The 2018 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée is full-bodied but quite approachable and easy to drink, loaded with black cherries and plummy fruit and tinged with licorice. A blend of 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and 10% other permitted varieties, it finishes long and silky. (JC) Inner quote mark (8/2019)

Outer quote mark Not yet bottled, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée continues to show beautifully and is a soft, charming example of this cuvée that’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate. Loads of blackcurrants, peppery herbs, bloody meat, and violet notes emerge from the glass and it’s medium to full-bodied, has a seamless, elegant texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It reminds me of an improved 2014, and despite its upfront appeal, it’s going to evolve nicely for 15 years or more. This estate has a long track record of off vintages aging and drinking beautifully far longer than anyone would predict, and I’m sure the same will be the case with the 2018. Inner quote mark (10/2020)

K&L Notes

John Livingstone Learmonth for The Cradle of the Rhone: "Dark, full robe; there is an inky quality to the nose, beef stock, squid pulp, entrails, with cassis fruit inside, a cool aspect from that. The palate is robust but well channeled, keeps going with a decisive delivery into a salted close, a spark of freshness there. It’s well built wine which will evolve well, become complex, and be nicely up to beef dishes. Its shape is rather upright, and I sense the inclusion of stems to aid its freshness. The juiciness of the fruit appeals." (10/2019)

For a producer that has the reputation of often being… well… a little funky. The nose on the Cuvee Reservee is clean, beautiful and brilliant. There is Castelvetrano olive and black cherry with savory undertones. Unabashedly fruity on the palate, waves of black fruited-goodness give way to an earthy finish with crackling tannins and spice. Unmistakably old school Chateauneuf-du-Pape that delivers wonderfully in the glass.
