2019 Bodegas Lanzaga (Telmo Rodríguez) "LZ" Rioja

SKU #1504031 94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Very pretty and aromatic with plum and orange peel with floral undertones. Medium to full body, with very fine tannins and a beautiful, fine-grained finish. Drinkable now, but a year or two will really show it off. From organically grown grapes. Inner quote mark (9/2020)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark It was not an easy vintage in Rioja, where they saw drought, bad fruit setting and minor damage from frost and hail, all of which caused a reduction in yields. But the end of the season was dry, the grapes were healthy, and based on what I could see in this young red, the wines are moderately ripe and quite good. This comes from their own organically grown and head-pruned vineyards at 500 to 700 meters in altitude on limestone-rich slopes. It fermented in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts and was kept in concrete for six to seven months. It's pure fruit, like biting into a bunch of ripe grapes, juicy and refreshing. This is a fantastic everyday Rioja with a twist. That twist is no oak, this wine only sees the inside of small concrete tanks. Without the oak all we get is pure dark Tempranillo fruit, with just a splash of Garnacha and Granciano. The nose is a mix of fresh black and blue fruits, muted florals, herbal and spice tones with a hint of forest floor earthiness. The palate is where the absence of oak takes the wine in an unexpected direction, it feels more like a rich and structured Rhone wine, my thoughts took me to Gigondas, than traditional Rioja. It is how the dark fruits, earth, spice, and herbs are interwoven that brings me to that unexpected comparison. Behind that intense range of flavors the wine only expresses Rioja, the acid, tannins and the Rioja minerality shine through. There is a whole lot of wine here and for not a lot of money. The complexity, concentration and length of this wine well exceed expectations for a wine at this point.

Bright cherry, tart cranberry, brand new leather and cured meat with an amazing acid wash and middle of the road tannins makes for a wonderful, unapologetically Spanish bottle of wine that still represents the international movement towards more focused, balanced bottlings. Fresh and vibrant in a way Rioja of 20 years ago could never have been accused of. As young as it is, it still has a passable complexity to to rival more developed wines, and with air leans into the savory leather and protein notes that call for a side of ham or a lean cut of steak to make everything whole.
