The Silenus property in the Oak Knoll district of Napa Valley was planted to vines back in 1968. The fruit has historically been sold to the likes of Silver Oak, Robert Mondavi, Inglenook, Clos du Val, and others. Eventually the owners built a winery on the property, making them the 35th Napa Valley winery established post- Prohibition. Their "Tyros" bottling includes both estate-grown fruit as well as purchased fruit from other select AVAs across the Valley. It's primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), with Merlot (23%) rounding out the balance. The wine gets the same first-class treatment as their more expensive wines. It is aged for 22 months in 50% new French oak, 10% new American oak, and the rest in neutral barrels. This is high-quality Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon made by an estate-driven winery.

The search for cold weather, cozy up Cab is over! As the weather keeps growing cooler and cooler the more I crave a silky smooth Cabernet to curl up with on these chilly evenings. Tyros easily checks all of those boxes, and delivers an extra oomph with it's complexity of warm spice, pressed flowers, and autumn herb notes layered on top of its juicy dark fruits. What's even more pleasing is the price we are able to share for such a high quality, small estate wine from Napa. At this value, it will be easy to keep my home stocked for the season!

Ever since our wildly successful Liparita offers, we've been scouring Napa Valley for another $20 Cabernet Sauvignon. Our criteria demanded that the wine taste dramatically better than the price, it had to come from a small, estate grown, independent winery (not corporate wine), and we needed it to be a great deal. Well, look no further. The Tyros Cabernet is a plush, robust Cabernet, filled with bold fruit. Plum, blackberries, and a hint of Tahitian vanilla rise from the glass. Much like more expensive Napa Valley Cabernets, the enticing fruit components are complimented by bay leaf, rose petals, and toasty oak. I am extremely excited about this wine. I suspect it will become our best selling Cabernet Sauvignon while it lasts.

Now here is a wine that definitely deserves a second look. The first sip was lovely, if a bit straightforward, but the more I tasted, the more I was astounded by the complexity in this bottle. I was even more shocked to find we could offer it at such a modest price. Black cherry, currants and chocolate set the stage, with hazelnut and baking spice filling out the background space. Aromas of pressed flowers, damp cedar and forest loam add further to the harmonious interplay of fruit and savory herbs. Though remarkably polished, it retains a tenacious, youthful edge - a certain joie de vivre - that will have cab fans clamoring for more. And with a deal like this, I'd encourage you to pick up a case before it's all gone.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
