93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The flagship red 2013 Reserva, the wine most people call simply Remelluri, was cropped from a cool, wet, challenging year, and it has a little less alcohol and higher acidity than the previous harvest. It had an élevage of 20 months in oak barriques. It has an herbal twist reflecting the conditions of the year, and it is developed and polished. It has the grippy, Nebbiolo-like tannins that are a signature of the Remelluri wines, a little more evident in a year like 2013. A Remelluri for food. (LG) Inner quote mark (6/2019)

Telmo Rodriguez has one of my favorite stories in all of the wine world. He is from a winemaking family with a great and historic vineyard in one of the best subregions of Rioja, Remelluri in Rioja Alavesa. Telmo went to Bordeaux to learn to make wine, became inspired after working at Petrus, came home and told his father he wanted to make a “great” wine at their estate. His father said, “no, we want to make good wine and a good amount of it”, that was what Rioja was about in the 80’s. Telmo left, he explored the country and started a bunch of small projects, in mostly forgotten regions all over the country, Valdeorras, Sierra de Gredos, Malaga, Toro, Ribera del Duero and Rioja. In 2009 he was asked to come back “home” and take over for his father. He did but only if changes could be made. Remelluri has always been one of the great Rioja houses (even if dad wanted to keep production levels up). It has always reflected it’s special Alavesa terroir with it’s stony calcareous soils giving purity and energy to it’s wines regardless of time in oak. The nose is deep, earthy, oaky, spicy the way only Rioja can be. The fruit on the nose is mulled dark cherries that are spiced with dark herbs and stones. The palate is full, restrained and energetic. It feels mature and youthful, that is Telmo’s touch. The cherry fruit starts lifted and then darkens in flavor without losing any brightness, that is what is special about Rioja Alavesa. The finish is great, the flavors just seem to fan out the back end, like are river rather than a peacocks tail. When I think about this wine it is very much like the holidays with the past and present intertwined so. Great for tonight, just decant for about an hour, this is a wine that you could build future holiday traditions upon, for at least a decade to come.
