2017 Mt. Brave Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1503103 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder bursts out of the glass with vivacious black currants, black cherries and wild blueberries notes with touches of dark chocolate, licorice, violets and cloves. Full-bodied, firm and very finely grained in terms of texture, the palate explodes with fruit and freshness, finishing very long and wonderfully fragrant. Impressive! 95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mt. Veeder) is another huge, tannic wine from Mt. Brave. Inky dark fruit, blackberry jam, bittersweet chocolate, spice and new leather are all kicked up a few notches in this dramatic, unctuous wine. Huge tannins wrap around all of the fruit in a big, potent Cabernet endowed with tremendous personality and class. (AG) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

95 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This offers blackberry, boysenberry and açaí berry compote flavors that sparkle with anise, sassafras and sage accents. Shows serious tarry grip, but that recedes into the fruit as this airs in the glass, leaving embers of singed juniper and alder at the very end. *Top 100 Wines of 2020, Highly Recommended* (JM) Inner quote mark (7/2020)

94 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Densely built in cassis, dried herb, cedar and sage, this lovely wine from the great appellation shows structure and grip in its youth. Dusty gravel adds to the weight and texture, with ample acidity to keep it fresh in the glass. *Editors' Choice* (VB) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is a richer, broader, more concentrated wine, yet it also has a serious amount of tannins. Lots of dark chocolate, blackcurrant, forest floor, and espresso notes all emerge from this full-bodied, concentrated, impressive effort that’s going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and have 20+ years of longevity. The blend is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% each of Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. 93+ Inner quote mark (1/2020)

92 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Extremely pure fruit with blueberries and blackcurrants. Lavender, too. Full body. Stony and slightly austere tannins, but real mountain character. Needs two to three years to soften a little, but I like it. Inner quote mark (2/2020)

Mt. Veeder is one of my favorite regions for Cabernet. The wines grown here are very distinctive. They have power and structure but also tend to retain beautiful varietal characters of cedar, tobacco and leather. Combined with the minerality expressed from the rugged volcanic and ancient sea bed soils, these wines are truly unique and fascinating. Mt Brave captures exactly what I described above with the extra bit of flare and exoticism Chris Carpenter puts into his wines. The 2017 might be best release of this wine in recent memory, perhaps owing to the declassification of Lokoya wines that were not produced in 2017. I love that this wine has the upfront fruit and lush texture to be enjoyed young, but at the same time there is obvious potential for ageing here with mountain tannins woven into the fabric of rich, dark fruit. Those compelling cigar box and cedar notes are here too adding another layer on complexity beyond the luxurious fruit. This wine is very well done, nothing is out of place, the balance impeccable. In this day and age when you across a wine of this pedigree, with triple 95 point scores from the top publications, the price tag is typically MUCH higher. This is a great buy for those folks who like to drink super high-end, cult Napa Cabs, but don't want to spend $200-$500 per bottle doing it.
