2017 Bodegas Aleanna "El Enemigo" Malbec Mendoza

SKU #1502910 94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Made with grapes from Gualtallary and aged for 15 months in old foudres, this Malbec, mixed with 10% Cabernet Franc, is proof of the beauty of the combination: the Franc lends the Malbec greater discipline and depth. Bright purple in the glass. The nose offers fresh cherries and plums with aromas of thyme. Gentle in the mouth, delivering fine, subtle tannins that lend framework, all with a genial freshness that brings the flavors to life and pleasantly stretches out the slightly taut palate. A delicious wine. (JH) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

Outer quote mark Love the blackberry, flower and orange-peel character. Medium body, creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. This is real Malbec. Total whole-berry fermentation gives this freshness and brightness. Tension to the very friendly fruit at the end. Inner quote mark (4/2020)

Outer quote mark The 2017 El Enemigo Malbec has 10% Cabernet Franc and fermented with 50% full clusters and indigenous yeasts, then matured in oak foudres for 15 months. The oak is perfectly integrated into the fruit, and the wine comes through as floral and fruit-driven, elegant, with moderate ripeness, focused and clean flavors and very round tannins. It's long and tasty. (LG) 92+ Inner quote mark (10/2019)

Outer quote mark Adrianna Catena joined forces with Alejandro Vigil, the head winemaker at Catena Zapata, to create this label in 2009. Their goal was to meld modern winemaking techniques with older traditions, like fermenting with ambient yeasts in cement tanks, as they did for a portion of this wine. The brightness and verve of the blend lasts past the smoke of the oak and brings a sense of freshness to the blackberry flavors. It’s modern but balanced, especially if there’s a double-cut pork chop on hand. Inner quote mark (10/2020)

91 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Explosively fruity and filled with toasty accents to raspberry, baked cherry and red currant flavors. Hot stone and underbrush on the enveloping finish. (KM) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

K&L Notes

93 points Tim Atkin "The El Enemigo Malbec contains 10% Cabernet Franc - Ale Vigil is a master at blending the two varieties - and all comes from bony soils in Gualtallary in the upper part of the Uco Valley. Fermented with 50% whole bunches, this is all about fruit and flavour rather than wood, with real zip, freshness and vibrancy, chalky minerality and fine-grained tannins."

Bodegas Aleanna has quickly become one of my favorite wineries from Argentina. The Gran Enemigo from Gualtallary a few years ago is one of the most revelatory wines I have had. It was amazing. I have not had a red wine that was like that from Argentina before. It put Gualtallary firmly on my radar and it made me reassess Cabernet Franc. Then I tried their Chardonnay, wow. And the next vintage, and the next vintage. I am ashamed it took me so long to do more exploration into their portfolio. But that is in the past and this Malbec is in a glass in front of me. There are two things that you cannot miss right away with this. The first is the color, it is deep and saturated it makes me think of berry stained fingers. The second is the nose, it is vibrant, pretty and focused with layers of fruit and fine spice that are caressed with a subtle floral component. You can see the magic of Cabernet Franc, it could be the best dancing for Malbec. The spice components blend perfectly, the Franc's tannins support and focus the Malbec and the Malbec exuberance opens up the reticent Franc's herbaceousness. Then the palate, I hate to use dances again but, the wine effortlessly glides across the palate. It is silky, like a ribbon being drawn across your palate, up to the very end and then you get a fine tannin that shows up at the same time and the chalky Gualtallary terroir expresses itself. All the pretty fruits on the nose are on the palate. The linger and linger. I should not be surprised with how good this wine is, but I am.

Deeply flavored but unabashedly fresh and vibrant. This wine's deep purple hue only hints at the dark rich, ripe plume tones that are mixed up with cooked dark cherry and blackberry cobbler tones. Narrow in the palate upfront, the wine broadens with food and is a generous pairing partner, the smidge of Cab Franc lending a pleasant tartness that balances the flavor wonderfully. Simply everything from the "El Enemigo" line is delicious.
