Bodegas Aleanna has quickly become one of my favorite wineries from Argentina. The Gran Enemigo from Gualtallary a few years ago is one of the most revelatory wines I have had. It was amazing. I have not had a red wine that was like that from Argentina before. It put Gualtallary firmly on my radar and it made me reassess Cabernet Franc. Then I tried their Chardonnay, wow. And the next vintage, and the next vintage. I am ashamed it took me so long to do more exploration into their portfolio. But that is in the past and this Malbec is in a glass in front of me. There are two things that you cannot miss right away with this. The first is the color, it is deep and saturated it makes me think of berry stained fingers. The second is the nose, it is vibrant, pretty and focused with layers of fruit and fine spice that are caressed with a subtle floral component. You can see the magic of Cabernet Franc, it could be the best dancing for Malbec. The spice components blend perfectly, the Franc's tannins support and focus the Malbec and the Malbec exuberance opens up the reticent Franc's herbaceousness. Then the palate, I hate to use dances again but, the wine effortlessly glides across the palate. It is silky, like a ribbon being drawn across your palate, up to the very end and then you get a fine tannin that shows up at the same time and the chalky Gualtallary terroir expresses itself. All the pretty fruits on the nose are on the palate. The linger and linger. I should not be surprised with how good this wine is, but I am.

Deeply flavored but unabashedly fresh and vibrant. This wine's deep purple hue only hints at the dark rich, ripe plume tones that are mixed up with cooked dark cherry and blackberry cobbler tones. Narrow in the palate upfront, the wine broadens with food and is a generous pairing partner, the smidge of Cab Franc lending a pleasant tartness that balances the flavor wonderfully. Simply everything from the "El Enemigo" line is delicious.

Malbec

- These days if you're drinking a Malbec it's probably from Argentina. The most planted grape in that country, varietally-labeled Argentine Malbecs are one of the wine market's great values, prized for their slight herbal component and dark, luscious fruit. Structurally, Argentina's Malbecs are much different than those grown in the grape's native France; they are riper, fruitier and fleshier. In France, the best iterations of Malbec can be found in the Cahors, where it can be quite decadent. It is also planted in the Loire Valley, where it is called Côt and is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon or Gamay, and in Bordeaux, where it has fallen from favor in many of the region's great blends because it is difficult to grow. In the United States, the varietal is frequently added to Meritage wines - Bordeaux style blends - but it is rarely found on its own.

- Argentina is regarded as one of the most dynamic wine-producing nations in the world, and possibly the most important wine-producing region in South America. Only four countries in the world produce more wine than Argentina. Considerable investments (much of which has come from famous French, Italian and California wine producers) have been made in new vineyards and winemaking technology in the past several years, which along with recent plantings of more premium varieties of grapes, has made Argentina much more competitive internationally. The Mendoza region is the most important region in Argentina's wine industry. And Malbec, among other Bordeaux varietals grown here, reigns supreme.
