2015 Roccolo Grassi Amarone della Valpolicella

SKU #1501796 96 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella is dark, rich and deeply alluring but with an energy that keeps you coming back to the glass. The bouquet draws you in with a mix of cherry and plum sauce, notes of sage, tobacco and hints of woodsmoke. It’s velvety-smooth, energized by vibrant acids with sweet red fruits and spices, yet it never crosses the line of becoming cloying or tiring. The balance here is remarkable, as the 2015 comes across as delicious and spry in spite of its girth and intensity. There’s a subtle coating of fine tannin and hints of bitter chocolate that linger throughout the finale, promising many years of development. The term that comes to mind is 'Rock Star Wine.' Amarone has taken a great turn stylistically over the last decade plus, the one-time over-ripe, raisined 17% alcohol wines that tasted like late harvest Zinfandel from Paso Robles don’t exist anymore. Amarone now is far more focused aromatic and 15% abv is now a regular level across the wine spectrum. This wine’s nose is surreal, swirling waves of Marasca cherry, plum, raw meat, middle eastern spices flow from the glass. On the palate the wine has a supple, textured exterior but is more like Barolo than old school Amarone. Tiers of red fruit, plum, and savory meaty flavors drive the wine across your tongue. Superbly balanced the wight and power of the wine are buoyed by an exceptional finishing lift. This wine will change your idea of what Amarone is and make it part of your cellaring future.

I am very fond of this, distinctive notes of traditional fruit like wild cherries, blackberry jam with vanilla. In the back of the palate, you will find walnut and hazelnuts. Wide nose with sweet & luscious impact and a pleasurable dry ending note on this medium to full-bodied Amarone.
