Outer quote mark There are three grapes here in more or less equal measure: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. You'll find sturdy notes of tilled earth in the 2016 Al Passo, with lots of intensity and ripe fruit. It would make a nice pairing with a good old spaghetti al ragù. The wine is balanced and bright without too much concentration or heft. It feels very Tuscan. Fresh, vibrant and full of character, the 2016 hits all the right notes. Sangiovese red fruits are nicely pushed forward. Al Passo is such a pretty and inviting wine in 2017. I have had past vintages of this wine and was always looking for a little more, I am a Sangiovese purist and with those predominantly Sangiovese bottlings something really was lacking. The winery has now changed the makeup of this wine and it is now more or less equal parts of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that are aged in a mix of 20% new 80% older French barriques and some larger casks as well. I must admit I was pretty stunned by the quality; I hadn’t expected the grace and balance this wine shows and it is about as complete as an under $20 Super Tuscan can be. The nose of this wine has depth it shows lots of plumy ripeness and the chocolaty overtones that go along with that, but it hasn’t given up its’ Tuscan soul, bits of dried sage and rosemary. On the palate the wine shows a lush, supple flow across your tongue, but it is supported by an excellent acidic balance that keeps it fresh and buoyant. The plumy richness begins to focus and show more complexity, spice, leather, and wild cherry as it remains in your mouth. The finish is very well balanced and shows length and lots of intrigue but just a long pleasing memory of richness.
