2017 Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin Grand Cru

SKU #1500735 98 points John Gilman

Outer quote mark The 2017 Chambertin from Domaine Rousseau is a magical wine. Recall that this was far more heavily-frosted in 2016 than was the case with the Clos de Bèze, so the pent up energy in the vines was channeled into great depth and concentration in the 2017, due to the Rousseau family reining in the yields earlier in the season. The perfumed nose soars from the glass in a complex blaze of plums, cherries, raspberries, grilled meats, cocoa powder, a glorious base of soil, woodsmoke and a suave foundation of nutty new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and beautifully sappy at the core, with stunning soil signature, fine-grained tannins and a very, very long, very complex and utterly refined finish. I love the sense of reserve this wine shows on the palate right now, despite it being utterly seductive aromatically in its youthful grandeur. A brilliant wine in the making! 98+ Inner quote mark (12/2018)

Outer quote mark The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has an extraordinarily detailed and intense bouquet with a cornucopia of vibrant red cherries, crushed strawberry, cranberry and stony aromas, the latter becoming more and more intense with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive body and depth. It is beautifully balanced with svelte tannin, velvety smooth with ample red fruit and spicy finish that lingers for 60 seconds in the mouth. Noble and aristocratic - just as Chambertin ought to be. Outer quote mark Discreet wood is present on the ultra-fresh and incredibly spicy though even more restrained nose that reflects notes of red berries, the sauvage, earth, floral and exotic tea wisps. The gorgeous mouthfeel of the imposingly constituted and admirably concentrated flavors is one of contrasts as the mid-palate is quite supple yet the powerful, driving, austere and muscular finish is robust, serious and austere. This almost painfully intense wine is jaw droppingly good and somewhat curiously relative to how the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze typically show at this stage, the Chambertin is the flashier of the two. We'll see in time though as it's usually the Chambertin that goes into a shell only to emerge 20+ years later. Be that as it may, today this is a genuine 'wow' wine. Inner quote mark (1/2020)

Outer quote mark If you're a fan of this grand cru bottling - and which Burgundy lover isn't? - there's a lot more to go around this year, with a record-equalling 46 barrels. The resulting wine doesn't have the concentration of 2015 or 2016, but it's still a spicy, focussed, refined wine with deftly integrated 100% new wood, tangy acidity and caressing tannins. 93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The king of the cellar is the 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru, a beautiful wine that offers up aromas of sweet cherries, wild berries, raw cocoa, warm spices and candied peel, complemented by ineffable savory nuances and a classy top note of peony. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and vibrant with juicy acids and a deep core of vibrant fruit that largely cloaks its fine structuring tannins. The Clos de Bèze may be richer and heartier, but the Chambertin is finer, longer and more complete. This is a generous crop for Domaine Armand Rousseau, which will come as some relief to wine lovers smarting over reduced allocations in the frost-ravaged 2016 vintage, Cyrielle Rousseau describing the 2017 growing season as easy and uneventful by comparison. In keeping with the vintage, the wines are supple and open-knit, reminiscent of the decidedly charming 2007 vintage at this address. While this year's portfolio doesn't hit the highs of 2016 and 2015, the wines will also demand less patience, offering more immediate pleasure. There have been some changes of personnel at this venerable address, but Cyrielle Rousseau seems increasingly self-assured at the helm, and progress appears to be being made in the vines of the Château de Gevrey-Chambertin which the domaine has been working for some years now. I look forward to seeing how the 2017s show from bottle—the mise being planned for February-March—after they complete their élevage. (WK) Inner quote mark (1/2019)

K&L Notes

96-98 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Plenty of depth of colour, the nose is very backward – not that there is nothing here but it is all in reserve, then along comes the fruit, a delicious subtlety along with the concentrated elegance. Quite linear, wood showing its paces, deep raspberry fruit with some alpine strawberry, nothing black here. Fine balanced long finish. So much in reserve though. Tasted: November 2018."
